The football organization welcomed 13-year-old Jude Fairchild to watch the Chiefs practice and join their team huddle May 28. Fairchild received a liver transplant last summer and has continued to receive treatment for his rare disease called progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis type 1, or PFIC-1, which is estimated to affect just 1 in 50,000 to 100,000 people worldwide. Seven Wildcats to vie for All-America honors at NCAA Championships this week. MANHATTAN, Kan. (K-State Athletics) – The K-State track and field teams will be represented by seven athletes at the NCAA Championship at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., from Wednesday (June 5) through Saturday (June 8). By Annie Wolfe, Pottawatomie County Times The Pottawatomie County Commission will hold off on a road agreement with a quarry, after concerns were raised by citizens Monday regarding the 10 cents per ton of aggregate sold that Mid-States Materials would pay to the county. That funding would be used for maintenance of the designated haul route from the quarry and for Wheaton Road. Citizens were concerned the agreed upon sum does not account for inflation. Commissioner Greg Riat says he’s fielded similar concerns, and noted more time was needed to explore other ways the agreement could be written to account for inflation. MANHATTAN, Kan. (K-State Athletics) – Kansas State added its fourth FBS transfer of the spring window on Tuesday with the signing of cornerback Jordan Dunbar to a Financial Aid Agreement. Dunbar comes to K-State after spending the previous four seasons at Rice. He redshirted the 2023 season and will have two more years of eligibility remaining. By AJ Dome, The Mercury Officials with Riley County Emergency Management and the National Weather Service found signs of tornado damage after severe weather blitzed the Manhattan area in early May. Emergency Management Director Russell Stukey told county commissioners Monday that he activated the outdoor warning sirens in several locations across the county for severe thunderstorms on May 6. Sirens blared shortly after 7:30 p.m. May 6. Tornado warnings were also issued for parts of Clay and Pottawatomie counties on May 6. Researchers at Kansas State University have developed an improved treatment for lung cancer. According to a university release Tuesday, project collaborators recently completed the first procedure in Australia as part of a clinical study. The procedure involves improved bronchoscopic microwave ablation treatment which officials hope could treat small lung tumors. K-State collaborated with Royal Melbourne Hospital, phenoMapper LLC and Australian Healthcare Solutions on the clinical study, which was reportedly “straightforward and required skills that all interventional pulmonologists would possess,” according to Royal Melbourne professor of medicine Daniel Steinfort.
