A 24-year-old man was arrested Thursday.  Miles Corbin of Manhattan was arrested on a warrant for the offense of failure to appear that originated in Atchison County. At the time of this report Corbin was confined at the Riley County Jail on “no bond.”

One of Manhattan’s largest businesses is changing hands at the end of the month. GTM Sportswear, which specializes in team warm-ups and uniforms and does business nationwide, came to a purchase agreement with apparel giant HanesBrands, Inc. on Wednesday night. GTM opened its doors in 1989 and employs more than 650 people at its headquarters on McCall Road. Property owners typically want high values if they plan to sell, according to county officials. But that’s not the case when it comes to tax time. Those two very different wants have made life difficult for county appraisers across the state, and the Kansas County Appraisers Association wants to address those competing views from property owners when the legislature reconvenes in January. TOPEKA — Kansas is reporting that its tax collections in August fell $10 million short of expectations. It was the fourth consecutive month that the state has failed to hit its revenue projections. Tax collections also have been lower than anticipated 10 of the past 12 months. The state Department of Revenue reported Thursday that the state collected about $427 million in taxes last month, when a fiscal forecast made in April predicted that the state would take in more than $437 million. U.S. Senator Jerry Moran’s staff notified Manhattan Area Technical College (MATC) that the institution has been selected to receive funding under the Strengthening Institutions Program (i.e., Title III), through the U.S. Department of Education. The grant can run for up to five years, and the funding for the first year (October 1, 2016-September 30, 2017) is $449,986.00. ELLIS — A 3.2 magnitude earthquake has shaken part of northern Kansas. The Kansas Geological Survey says the quake struck Wednesday about 15 miles northwest of Hays. No damage has been reported. Scientists say damage is not likely in earthquakes below magnitude 4.0. It was centered about 150 miles away from the quake-prone Kansas counties of Harper and Sumner.

A local transportation official received some state recognition recently.  Flint Hills Area Transportation Agency Director Anne Smith was presented the Willie M Murry Award at the annual Kansas Public Transit Association (KPTA) meeting. The award is presented to an individual who has distinguished himself or herself in serving public transit in Kansas. It is named after Rev. Willie M Murry who was a dedicated pioneer for transit in the State of Kansas.
