Justin Brown, 26, of Saint George, Kansas was arrested on August 31, 2016 at approximately 9:05 PM while in the 400 block of Walters Drive. Brown was arrested on the offenses of domestic battery, criminal threat, aggravated assault, criminal trespass, violation of a protective order, and a warrant for the offense of failure to appear (original offense listed as violation of a protection order). Brown’s warrant had a bond of $5,000.00 and the additional offenses gave him “no bond.” He was confined at the time of this report. BUCYRUS, Kan. (AP) It could be months before an eastern Kansas business finds out if one of its peaches has broken a world record. KSHB-TV reports a peach weighing 763.39 grams — about 2 pounds — was picked Aug. 24 at Tubby Fruits Peach Orchard in Bucyrus. The current world record of 725 grams was set in 2002. Two certified scientists from the Johnson County Extension office weighed the peach using a verified scale provided by the USDA. The process was documented with both videos and photos. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Gov. Sam Brownback is making a point of soliciting opinions and ideas from educators, parents and others on school funding. Brownback had a news conference Wednesday to call for ideas and announce that he’s urging groups and individuals to email their comments or proposals. He also sent a letter to more than 50 school districts and organizations. Brownback is asking people to submit their comments by Nov. 30. HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) A 17-year-old Kansas boy has been found guilty of two counts of first-degree for setting a fire that killed his mother and sister. The Hutchinson News reports Sam Vonachen also was convicted Wednesday of aggravated arson and attempted murder. During closing arguments, prosecutors said the teen, who was 13 at the time of the Sept. 26, 2013, blaze, wanted people to die. Vonachen’s attorney countered that he had a mental defect and wasn’t responsible for his actions. A 23-year-old man was arrested yesterday.  Joseph Brand of Manhattan was arrested on the offenses of possession of opiates, opium, or narcotic drugs and interference with law enforcement which gave him a bond of $5,000.00  This arrest stemmed from a warrant issued in Riley County. E-cigarette smokers in Manhattan may soon be pushed outdoors as the result of a new ordinance being considered by the city commission. At Tuesday’s city commission work session Jared Wasinger, management assistant, gave the audience a general idea of what an e-cigarette ban would look like. In 2008 Manhattan was the first community in Kansas to ban cigarettes in public buildings. Since then Kansas has issued its’ own cigarette ban, and Wasinger said an e-tobacco ban would look largely the same. EDGERTON — A 32-year-old Kansas man has pleaded no contest in the death of a bar patron who was struck in the head with a pool cue a week before Christmas. WDAF-TV reports Gregory Cooper of Edgerton was charged with second-degree murder and attempted aggravated battery in the death of 23-year-old Tyler Knudsen at an Edgerton bar on Dec. 19. Johnson County prosecutors said Cooper “unintentionally, but recklessly” killed Knudsen when he swung a pool cue at another man’s head but instead hit the victim.
