On May 28th, 2016 at approximately 11:53 PM, members of the Riley County Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the 2200 block of Seth Child Road in Manhattan. Subsequent to this stop, officers seized approximately 1.7 grams of methamphetamine, 2.4 grams of marijuana, as well as other controlled substances to include illegal prescription drugs. Numerous items of drug paraphernalia were also located and seized as part of this investigation. The Manhattan City Commission reviewed a draft ordinance that adds sexual orientation and gender identity to the City’s list of protected classes. “We provided them (Commission) with them with a series of definitions,” said Deputy City Manager, Jason Hilgers, “in addition to identifying employment, housing and public accommodations as the areas where we would stress were unlawful discriminatory practices would occur.” Commissioner Usha Reddi said Tuesday the ordinance simply changes the City’s policy. “A Policy’s not going to change how people feel about each other…but we can make people feel protected.” The latest proposal includes a hearing officer who would…

Riley County emergency personnel responded to the 500 block of McDowell Creek Road in Manhattan on Saturday at approximately 11:10 p.m. for a report of a suicide. When responding officers arrived they found Brian James Gaede-Shilling, 30, of Manhattan, was deceased from an apparent self-inflicted wound. Police do not suspect foul play based on information and evidence collected at the scene.

Riley County emergency crews were called to the 1800 block of Kientz Drive Tuesday afternoon (approximately 2:15 p.m.) for a single vehicle accident. Riley County Police Acting Public Information Officer Lt. Greg Steere tells KMAN there was one victim, reportedly in critical condition. At last report a Lifestar was being arranged. Outgoing Riley County District Court Judge David Stutzman has ruled on pretrial motions filed in a second degree murder case involving Joshua Mall of Riley. The Judge agreed to the State’s motion to admit evidence of prior convictions and denied the defendant’s motion to suppress the blood alcohol test in the case. Police responded to multiple complaints of shots being fired in the 2400 block of Walden Lane, in Manhattan on May 30th, 2016 at approximately 10:47 PM. Reports indicated that multiple rounds may have also struck an occupied residence in the 2200 block of Griffith Terrace. Police arrested Eric Crawford, 19, and Dillon Evans, 22, both of Manhattan, related to this incident. Updated Wednesday evening: Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the St. George boat ramp shortly before 4:30 p.m. Saturday for a report of a female being swept down river. When Deputies arrived, witnesses said that a row boat, occupied by three people, capsized after it hit a low-hanging branch. All three occupants jumped out of the boat and one of them knocked Latrice Douglas (27) of Manhattan off of her raft. She didn’t know how to swim and was swept down river.
