The Manhattan City Commission heard 2016 funding requests Tuesday from seven outside agencies. The largest requests came from he Social Services Advisory Board in the amount of approximately $393 thousand and the Special Alcohol Fund Advisory Committee $562 thousand. The Library, Flint Hills Area Transportation Agency, Downtown Manhattan, Inc and Manhattan Arts Center also presented their 2016 funding requests. A federal jury in Topeka Tuesday delivered guilty verdicts against four defendants charged with trafficking crack cocaine in the Junction City and Manhattan areas, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said. During trial, prosecutors presented evidence that in late 2012 and early 2013 agents of Kansas Bureau of Investigation and detectives from the Junction City Police Department investigated a large crack cocaine trafficking organization in Junction City and Manhattan. The organization was led by defendants Albert Banks and Anthony Thompson, who acquired the drugs from three different suppliers and sold the drugs to distributors who resold them on the streets.   48-year-old John Thomas of Leonardville pleaded no contest   Monday to three charges of sexual exploitation of a child.   Thomas appeared at the Riley County District Courthouse       alongside his attorney Larry McRell.  As KMAN had previously reported, an affidavit was released in late march and referenced 100 counts of sexual exploitation of a child.  Riley County police say Thomas allegedly had numerous images of child pornography. A warrant was issued for his arrest in February. He was arrested in northern Arizona one month later. On Monday, June 29, a pavement marking project will begin on a 12.19-mile stretch of I-70 from the Geary/Riley County line east to the K-99 junction in Wabaunsee County. Pavement marking work will take place on the interchange ramps at Frontage Road (Riley County), Tallgrass Road and Wabaunsee Road, and on the westbound I-70 bridge over Mill Creek (Wabaunsee County). Project work will take place during daylight hours, Monday through Saturday (excluding holiday weekends).
