TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas legislators have drafted a new plan for raising taxes to close a budget shortfall that’s similar to one the Senate already has rejected. The plan agreed to Sunday by three Senate and three House negotiators would raise $423 million during the fiscal year that begins July 1. That’s more than enough to balance the budget. The plan would increase the state’s sales tax to 6.55 percent from 6.15 percent and boost the cigarette tax by 50 cents a pack to $1.29. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Friends gathered to remember a Wichita State student killed in a bomb attack in Saudi Arabia. The Wichita Eagle reports that Abduljaleel Alarbash, a 22-year-old electrical engineering student, was killed late last month when he and his cousin prevented an Islamic State suicide bomber from entering a crowded mosque in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. He had returned home to Saudi Arabia to get married. About 100 people attended a candlelight vigil for him Friday at Wichita State University. Speakers included John Bardo, university president, and Maira Salim, president of the Muslim Student Association.

According to the Kansas Missing and Unsolved Facebook page a Manhattan girl has been missing since Friday. 15-year old Madison Asebedo was last seen at around 11 p.m Friday when she was reportedly picked up by one or more people at an unknown location. Asebedo is decribed as five fee six inches tall and weighing 170 pounds with red hair with blonde at the bottom and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a red “Zoo York” jacket. Anyone with information on Asebedo’s disappearance or whereabouts should call Riley County Police at 537-2112.

Updated Noon Sunday: Officers with the Riley County Police Department responded to the 200 block of Brooklawn Drive in Manhattan on June 7, 2015 at approximately 2:15 AM after receiving an emergent call for service involving a knife stab wound. Once on scene officers found that Harry Russom III, 36, of Manhattan had received injury to the torso following an argument involving Matthew Flerlage, 21, of Manhattan.
