The Kansas City Chiefs with the 18th selection overall picked Washington cornerback Marcus Peters in the first round of the National Football League draft held Thursday night in Chicago. The Chiefs made the pick that some might see as a risk since Peters was actually dismissed from the Huskies during the 2014 season after run-ins with the coaching staff. Jameis Winston was selected #1 overall out of Florida State by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota from Oregon was taken at #2 by the Tennessee Titans.

Former Manhattan mayor Loren Pepperd  had a special request for Riley County law board members on Thursday night in Manhattan city hall.  Pepperd asked the Riley County Law Enforcement Agency  Law Board to reach out to local Islamic leaders to help in the identification of possible extremists during the public comment session as the special law board meeting got underway.  Pepperd pointed out the recent detention of the terror suspect attempting to commit an act of terror.  The plot was thwarted  with the help of muslim clergy in Topeka.  Board chair Robert Boyd acknowledged the request, and stated the agency would continue to work with…

Thursday evening the Manhattan Convention and Visitors Bureau held the 7th annual Get Around 2 It! outdoor event, showcasing about 40 businesses promoting local family and outdoor events at the Blue Earth Plaza downtown. This event was in celebration of National Tourism Week, according to Bureau Director Karen Hibbard. “We’re great at procrastinating and saying, you know, I’m going to go do that someday when I get around to it. A bill relating to competitive bid thresholds for sewer projects is currently working it’s way through the Kansas legislature.  Riley County Commissioners have been keeping an eye on the legislation, as they hope to get the threshold up to $25,000. County Counselor , Clancy Holeman said, during Thursday’s commission meeting, the county’s lobbyist is not a proponent of the current version of the bill. Manhattan sales tax receipt numbers were up this last reporting period, with $845,877 collected in April, compared to $821,051 the month before. That’s also up from 2014 numbers for April of $806,747.  $740,000 had  been budgeted for this past month. The April numbers generally reflect March retail sales across the community. Manhattan Finance Director Bernie Hayen indicates all of the retail sectors were up which include grocery sales, auto sales, and big box stores, with the exception of the retail stores within the Manhattan Town Center.  Hayen says that likely reflects the recent closing of the Sears store. The Finance Director adds sales…

FORT RILEY, Kansas – Two battalions assigned to the inactivating 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, are set to case their colors in ceremonies this month at the post’s Cavalry Parade Field. The casing ceremony for the “Rangers” of the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, is scheduled for 10 a.m. May 1. The 2nd Bn., 16th Inf.
