LAWRENCE–Lawrence Memorial Hospital officials say the three insurance companies managing Kansas’ Medicaid system routinely turn down legitimate claims to hold down costs. The three contractors for the state’s privatized Medicaid system, known as KanCare, deny the accusation. The Lawrence Journal-World (http://bit.ly/1MHmTNf ) reports other hospitals have made such accusations in the past. Taryn Schraad, who deals with insurance claims appeals at the Lawrence hospital, told a state legislative panel Tuesday that the facility frequently gets denial notices, often with no explanation given. HUTCHINSON–Kansas state officials are considering stiffer penalties for water violations. The Hutchinson News (http://bit.ly/22voUaS) reports that the higher penalties are among four proposed changes that state water officials plan to present to Gov. Sam Brownback’s office by Feb. 1. The plan is the result of 500 meetings and 15,000 comments over the past couple of years. They’re all part of Brownback’s effort to develop ideas to preserve and extend the state’s water resources. TOPEKA– An Arizona company that told customers it was selling products to help a charitable organization has been ordered to pay $10,000 and reimburse customers. A Shawnee County District Court also ordered Phoenix-based American Handicapped and Disabled Workers to stop collecting payments from Kansas customers. The company’s owner is Adli Najib Dasuqi of Waterford, Michigan. Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said in a news release Wednesday the company’s telemarketers sold household items such as light bulbs and trash bags. Riley County Police officers and fire officials responded to a vehicle fire in the 1000 block of Temple Lane in Manhattan at approximately 12:40 a.m. Thursday. When officers arrived they found an unknown color Cadillac Escalade fully engulfed in fire. The vehicle was unoccupied and was a total loss. A Chapman man faces robbery charges in Junction City and other jurisdictions, following his arrest by Dickinson county law enforcement authorities. Travis Moreland, 23, was taken into custody while Dickinson County Sheriff’s and Abilene Police Departments were investigating an incident that had taken place in their jurisdiction. Updated Thursday morning: Firefighters were called to the Riverchase Mobile Home Park north of Manhattan at about two p.m. Wednesday, with damage estimated at nearly $20,000 to the structure and contents. The owner of the mobile home is listed as Lisa Volpent, with Kerrie Volpent the occupant. There were no injuries. The cause is not known although Riley County Fire Chief Pat Collins tells KMAN it appears the fire started in a rear bedroom, more than likely caused by an electrical short in the outlet.
