Wamego’s USD 320 Board of Education heard proposals and bid openings at Monday’s meeting. Board President Richard Weixelman opened the meeting with presentations from three different companies for the school security cameras. The presentations were from Topeka based Alexander Open Systems, Manhattan based Redi-Systems, Inc. and Wamego Telecommunications Company. The board will study the proposals and make a decision at the April meeting. The Riley County Police Department Dispatch Center received an emergent call for service regarding an apparent gunshot wound, near the 500 block of Riley Avenue in Ogden at approximately 2:10 a.m. Tuesday morning. The victim was transported to Mercy Regional Health Center and was ultimately life-flighted to a medical care facility in Topeka for further treatment. No arrests have been made, but RCPD believes this to be an isolated event and has no evidence to suggest the general public is in danger at this time. The uncle of 19-year old Tony Robinson who was shot by a white Wisconsin police officer says he has confidence in the police department to investigate the teen’s death.
Chairman and editor in chief of Forbes Media, Steve Forbes, took the stage to loud applause in McCain auditorium on Monday night. Forbes touted some of the same themes from his previous presidential run including flat taxes, using the gold standard to set the value of the dollar, and removing excess regulation. Forbes blamed the recession on the volatility of the dollar, and made mention of monetary policy as being one of the roots of instability within the nation’s economic system. A Manhattan man accused of first-degree attempted murder appeared in Riley County District Court for his arraignment on Monday, March 9. Samual Dartez, 30, is facing charges in connection with a November incident in which he allegedly stabbed a woman about the face and neck. However, upon arrival in the court room, Dartez stated a request for a new lawyer on his case, delaying the scheduled arraignment. Due to the short notice and lack of reasoning provided for the request, Judge David Stutzman decided to give Dartez and his attorney 1 to 2 days to discuss the issue, saying he wanted Dartez to “have some time to…

Riley County Police responded to 142 reports and made 46 arrests over the Fake Patty’s Day weekend. County EMS received 66 calls for service, 50 of which were related to the holiday. These were just a few of the numbers presented during Monday’s Riley County Commission meeting.
