In light of the recent controversy concerning video that emerged showing a police officer getting physical with a student in South Carolina, Riley County commissioners brought the issue to Riley County Police Department Capt. Updated Noon Tuesday: On Sunday November 1, 2015, at 7:25 p.m., an employee with the Manhattan Sewage Treatment plant, located at 1201 Levee Drive, Manhattan, Pottawatomie County, reported that an individual was within the treatment plant, and attempting to remove a John Deere gator. Officers from the Riley County Police Department and Deputies from the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area, and located Ian Eastman, 28, from Alma. Ian Eastman was arrested for burglary, theft,criminal damage to property and trespass on a railroad. Eastman is currently being held at the Pottawatomie County Jail on a $5000 bond. Officers with the Riley County Police Department are investigating a reported rape which occurred in the city limits of Manhattan on October 30, 2015 during the evening or night hours. This crime was reported on October 31, 2015 at approximately 2:50 PM and involved a 23-year-old female victim and a 25-year-old male suspect. The suspect is known to the victim. Police filed a report for the offenses of rape, aggravated domestic battery, and criminal restraint after being told of the incident. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) A former Kansas City church now houses at least 30 desktop computers that will be available to the public for free beginning Nov. 9. The Kansas City Star reports the project was created by Connecting for Good, a nonprofit that has worked to bridge the digital divide since 2011. The organization strives to bring email and the Internet to low-income people. The new center was open for preview tours Sunday. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Next semester the Lawrence Public Schools will introduce a pilot course that relies on free, openly licensed educational resources rather than textbooks. The Lawrence Journal-World reports the district’s plan is part of a new U.S. Department of Education campaign called #GoOpen, which encourages states, school districts and educators to use openly licensed educational materials. Lawrence Public Schools is one of 10 districts nationwide that have taken up the challenge to replace at least one textbook with open resources within the next year. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Two men were arrested early Monday after a seven-minute police chase through East Topeka. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that officers received a call to check on a stationary car. Police officials say they were checking on two men passed out in the front seat of the vehicle as the driver took off. Police followed as the car traveled about a mile and a half east on Interstate 70 and exited the highway. When police stopped the chase, both men were booked into the Shawnee County Jail.
