The City of Manhattan is now accepting applications for a Street Maintenance Steering Committee. Manhattan residents from a variety of backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The committee will be comprised of neighborhood representatives and local stakeholders. It will be tasked with formulating the wording of a ballot question that addresses future funding ofstreet maintenance activities in Manhattan. TOPEKA, Kan. Child support payments for separated or divorced parents in Kansas are expected to increase up to 3.5 percent next year under new guidelines adopted by the state Supreme Court. The court announced Monday that it adopted updates recommended by a 14-member committee that spent a year reviewing child support guidelines that took effect in 2012. The new guidelines take effect in January and will be used by district court judges to set parents’ payments. Federal law requires states to update their guidelines every four years. Authorities in Lawrence say a crowd caused thousands of dollars in damage when they took down a football goal post at the University of Kansas after the Kansas City Royals’ World Series win. TOPEKA, Kan. Four members of a motorcycle group that demonstrates outside the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka have pleaded not guilty to picketing during a religious event. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1M9ldwV ) that the group’s trial next month could bring clarity to a city ordinance the protesters say is ambiguous. The Wamego USD 320 Board of Education held a special meeting to discuss aspects of the District’s facilities needs. At Monday’s special meeting, Greg Vahrenberg, Bond Council from Piper Jaffray presented a detailed analysis of the District’s options for Bond Financing. He based his analysis on numbers gleaned from the architect’s drawings of the District’s plans, and covered financing options from 5 million to 38 million dollars. Riley County Police responded to a vehicle collision near the intersection of Claflin and Browning in Manhattan Monday at about 1:00 PM. Officers on scene found a 2004 Chrysler 2-door driven by Blake Clifton, 21, of Manhattan was traveling west on Claflin Road when it was struck by a 2015 Nissan Altima driven by Marlaina Wahl, 23, of Wheaton. Police determined that the Nissan Altima was traveling south on Browning Avenue when it failed to yield the right of way at the stop sign. A teenager was airlifted for medical treatment following a Monday accident in Geary County. The Geary County Sheriff’s Department reports Monday shortly before nine a.m. Deputies responded to the area of Old 40 Highway and Britt Road for a two vehicle injury accident. A 2003 Chevrolet Impala driven by Jimmie Burch of Junction City was traveling west on Old 40 and went to make a left turn on to Britt road when his vehicle struck a 1998 Ford Bronco traveling east driven by Jonah Farley of Chapman.
