By Tom Gilbert, K-State Athletics Communications Kansas State head coach Bruce Weber announced Friday evening that senior Nino Williams and sophomore Jevon Thomas will be unavailable for Saturday’s game at Texas. Williams will not travel due to personal reasons, but will re-join the team on Monday when it begins preparations for play in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship next week in Kansas City, Weber said. Thomas is being held out due to a coach’s decision and will also not travel.

Manhattan Regional Airport welcomed the surrounding community and community leaders as they opened the first phase of their terminal expansion project currently underway. The terminal will officially start service Monday night, and passengers will begin flying to and from the new building Tuesday morning. The new terminal is 20,000 square feet, which is almost 8,000 square feet larger than the old terminal. It is also decorated to represent the Flint Hills and give travelers more comfort than the previous terminal. A two county police chase reportedly originated with a stolen vehicle report out of Ogden. That’s according to Wamego Police Chief Mike Baker, who says the vehicle was initially located in Wamego between 4:30 and five Friday morning, in the Wamego Industrial Park. An officer began to follow the vehicle, which ended up in a chase also involving St. Mary’s Police and Wabaunsee County. Other sources indicate a lockdown of the Maple Hill School district. The driver is being described as a heavy set white male with a bushy goatee and bald head.
January unemployment numbers have been released for the Manhattan Metropolitan Statistical Area, and it appears they’re up nearly one full percent from the past month. Reports from the Kansas Department of Labor indicate that the January 2015 unemployment rate for the MSA, which includes Pottawatomie and Riley counties, is 3.9 percent, up from 3.0 percent in December 2014, but down from 4.5 percent one year ago in January 2014. However, the Manhattan MSA did have the lowest unemployment in the state, followed by Lawrence/Douglas County at 4.1 percent and the Kansas City Area at 4.6 percent. The Junction City Micro-Area in…
The Kansas Supreme Court has affirmed convictions and the sentence of a former Fort Riley soldier in the shooting death of a Kansas National Guard member on Jan.1, 2012. The opinion regarding Daniel Parker, 28, was released Friday, March 6, and although the 13-page document does find the prosecutor in the case committed misconduct, it says the misconduct did not prejudice the jury against Parker and deny him a fair trial. Parker had argued the prosecutor committed misconduct during closing arguments when he told jurors they were to consider Parker’s guilt for the lesser included crimes only if they first found him…
A Fort Riley soldier waived his right to a preliminary hearing Friday morning. Alexander McConnell, 22, was set to appear in court in connection with a February 2014 case in which he is charged with murder in the first degree and child abuse following the death of a 5-week-old baby. An affidavit received by KMAN indicates the infant involved in the incident sustained substantial bleeding within the skull, abrasions on the head, neck and chest, a bruised lung, and a broken neck. A Belvue man has been bound over in a first degree murder case following a preliminary hearing Friday morning in Pottawatomie County Court. Christopher Arand, 36, faces charges of first degree murder in connection with the November 2014 death of his uncle, Larry Arand of Belvue, and felony cruelty to animals. As KMAN earlier reported, an affidavit indicates the younger Arand hit his uncle in the back of the head with brass knuckles five times, then put a plastic bag over his head to suffocate him.
