(AP) A legislative committee’s proposed budget for the Kansas higher education system would shift money away from Kansas State University and the main University of Kansas campus. The Senate Ways and Means Committee on Thursday approved a higher education budget of $2.7 billion both for the fiscal year beginning July 1st and the following fiscal year. The panel endorsed a subcommittee’s proposal to trim operating funds for the main University of Kansas campus in Lawrence by $4.6 million each year. The Manhattan high boys basketball teams’ dream season came to a bitter close on Wednesday night as the 7th seeded Junior Blues of Washburn Rural upset the 2nd seeded Indians 59-58 in a class 6A Sub State Semi Final. Manhattan led 12-5 after the first quarter but found themselves trailing by two at the half 27-25. Manhattan was much better in the third quarter taking a 40-35 lead into the fourth quarter. The Manhattan Ogden USD 383 school board is one step closer to possibly conducting a mail ballot election to increase their location option budget authority by 3%.  The board currently has an LOB of 30%. Other Kansas school districts have explored this option this year, including USD 384 Blue Valley Randolph, to increase their revenue. A few concerns were raised by board members during the discussion at Wednesday night’s board meeting.  Board member, Darell Edie stated, “it’s appalling to me that it’s going to cost two teacher salaries to get this out there.  I think that’s fundamentally wrong”.  This statement…

Commander for the Denver Police Department, who was one of the keynote speakers for the spring conference of the Kansas Division of the International Association for Identification, or KDIAI, held at the Bluemont Hotel in Manhattan. However Priest also mentioned law enforcement officers are human and make mistakes. The Flint Hills Discovery Center Foundation was the recipient of $750,000 Wednesday morning.  The gift was presented by Bob Krause and Marty Vanier, who have a long history of philanthropy in supporting Kansas State University and the Flint Hills region. While Krause is a native of Chicago, Illinois, Vanier is a Kansas native.  Both commented on the center’s immersive experience theater.  Vanier said the property they own allows them to live the experiences they saw in the Tallgrass Prairie film room in real life everyday.
