The Wamego City Park was the scene of the Veteran’s Memorial groundbreaking ceremony Monday.   American Legion Post 172 Commander, Gary McCloud opened the ceremony with a ‘thank you’ to all who played a part in getting the idea, which came about in February of 2013, to this point.       The Wamego community has raised over $230,000 of the $250,000 needed to build the memorial.  According to McCloud, the remaining goods and services have been provided by the following:  Terry Force, Surveying Scott Dinger, Stripping and Hauling Rob Eichman (MCM), Base Grading and Concrete supplying Chris Hyberger (ECI), Electrical Pat…

WICHITA — An advocacy group has announced plans to try to recall a Sedgwick County commissioner who wants people in the U.S. illegally from participating in a federal nutrition program in Kansas. The Wichita Eagle reports the Immigration Advocacy Network announced Monday it’ll seek to recall Sedgwick County Commission Chair Richard Ranzau over his positions on health care and immigration. Sandrine Lisk, director of advocacy for the group, says they’ll apply within the week for a petition seeking Ranzau’s recall. Ranzau sent a letter to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment recently asking that Kansas participants in the the federal…

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas has announced the resignation of the director of the office that investigates sexual violence reports on campus. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that Jane McQueeny has resigned from her job as director of the university’s Office of Institutional Opportunity and Access. Her last day was Friday. The office was created in 2012 to investigate reports of sexual violence and other discrimination on campus. The office also recommends disciplinary action when a student is found responsible for sexual misconduct. A consultant for a Hollywood feature film stopped by the KMAN studio Tuesday morning. Francis Gary Powers, Jr., will speak at the K-State Alumni Center at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Powers is the son of Francis Gary Powers, Sr., who was a U-2 surveillance plane pilot during the Cold War. Powers was shot down over the Soviet Union in 1960 and his story is featured in “Bridge of Spies,” which is directed by Steven Speilberg and led by Tom Hanks. It opened in theaters last Friday. A Manhattan man was arrested at the Riley County Police Department Monday afternoon. Riley County police officers arrested 32-year-old Andre Quinton, Jr., on a warrant for cultivation of a controlled substance and analogs which are prohibited. The arrest stemmed from incidents in June and July of this year. He was given a bond of $25,000 and at the time of this report was confined at the Riley County Jail. Tre Smith, 22, of Ogden, was arrested while at the Riley County Police Department on Monday afternoon. Police served this arrest warrant — which originated in Geary County — and had the…
