HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) Kansas State Fair manager Denny Stoecklein is crediting good weather and enticing entertainment for a boost in attendance at this year’s fair. The Hutchinson News reports audited numbers announced Monday show 355,329 visitors attended the fair, which ran Sept. 5-14. This year’s gate was up by about 15,000 people from 2013 and the highest in 16 years. Stoecklein says it was also the fourth-highest attendance of all time although that statistic is unofficial, because audited attendance only began in 1978. An ambulance transports Ashoka Mukpo, who contracted Ebola while working in Liberia, to the Nebraska Medical Center’s specialized isolation unit Monday, Oct. 6, 2014, in Omaha, Neb., where he will be treated for the deadly disease. Mukpo is an American video journalist who was working in Liberia as a freelance cameraman for NBC News when he became ill last week.

Despite his efforts in convincing Riley County Chief Judge, Meryl Wilson to give him probation-Tracy Shane Roberts, of Wamego, will serve 18 months with the department of corrections. Roberts faced 30 counts of theft from the Flint Hills Builders Association, where he used to serve as the executive director. Judge Wilson began the sentencing by mentioning he had received several letters from local individuals. The Flint Rock Bridge replacement project in Pottawatomie County will be handled by a local construction firm, following Pottawatomie County action Monday morning. Pottawatomie County Commission Chair Stan Hartwich tells KMAN that was at the advice of FEMA,  the low bid from Ebert Construction of Wamego was approved  at $650,948.74. A Topeka man was sentenced Monday to 57 months in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to federal bank fraud charges in connection with a plan to build an apartment complex in Junction City. John Duncan (53) pleaded guilty to two counts of bank fraud, one count of money laundering, and one count of making false statements in documents required by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act. In court documents, Duncan was alleged to have obtained a $15.2 million construction loan for the purpose of constructing Quinton Pointe Apartments in Junction City. Two people were life flighted following an accident on Highway 24 east of Wamego, KMAN first told you about early Sunday. Cameron Renfro, 23, from Silver Lake and Jeffrey Fisher, 47, from Wamego were drivers involved in the accident, reported shortly after four a.m. Both Renfro and Fisher were trapped and had to be extricated from the pickup and car that collided. Responding were the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s office, Wamego Police, Pottawatomie County EMS, Lousiville, Wamego, and St. George Fire, and the Kansas Department of Transportation. Several Riley County department heads and employees turned out for the CIP (capitol improvement project) work session, held during Monday’s county commission meeting. Budget and Finance Officer, Johnette Shepek informed the commission they should have around one million dollars to spend for this year and next year’s non-funded purchases.  The long list of projects and equipment purchases is prioritized by department heads, and includes estimated prices.
