On Saturday (August 29) the Riley County Police Department will conduct a DUI Saturation Patrol. Officers involved in the Saturation Patrol will be looking for signs of impaired driving and other traffic violations. Motorists who show signs of alcohol and/or drug consumption will be evaluated and appropriate enforcement action will be taken. The purpose of this program is to place additional officers in and around the Manhattan area with the goal of detecting and deterring impaired driving. Three injury accidents were reported in Riley County Tuesday. Philip Byarlay, 83, of Randolph received a possible injury when the 2007 Toyota Corolla he was driving was eastbound on Green Randolph Road at Winkler Road, ran off the road to the right, hit an embankment, and came to rest in the south ditch facing northwest. That accident was reported at about 5:30 p.m. Melvin Kenworthy, 54, of Riley was taken to Via Christi Hospital following an accident involving a Freightliner farmtruck and the Harley Davidson motorcycle Kenworthy was driving. Roughly 60 people gathered around the steps of Chalmers Hall on the campus of Kansas State University Tuesday evening to remember Briona White, a 22-year-old K-State student who was gunned down along with a 20-year-old man in an alley in Chicago’s Far South Side on Aug. 6. The Manhattan City Commission discussed potential updates Tuesday to the City Park Master Plan. Senior Park Planner, Wyatt Thompson says staff has taken months of public input to create two main concepts. “Both concepts prioritize the pedestrian (and) bicycle access and connectivity through the park (and) they both seek to improve the quality of open green spaces,” said Wyatt Thompson, senior park planner for the city of Manhattan. Officers with the Riley County Police Department responded to a collision involving three vehicles Monday night at about 6:15 at the intersection of College Heights Road and Sunset Avenue in Manhattan. Kevin Williams, 34, of Manhattan was traveling south bound on Sunset Avenue while driving a 2001 Buick Century and Madison Hays, 18, of Manhattan was driving a 2006 Jeep Commander west bound on College Heights Road when her vehicle collided with Williams’ Buick. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday evening for a K-State student who was killed earlier this month. The K-State Black Student Union, along with the Division of Biology, will host a Memorial Service for Briona White at 6:30 p.m. As KMAN announced just a day after White’s death, the 22-year-old was killed in a shooting while visiting her hometown of Chicago in early August. The University Community is invited to join together on the steps of Chalmers Hall, as White’s memory is honored.
