Junction City Police are closer to enforcing a fairly new city ordinance, regarding listening or talking on wireless communication devices while driving. As previously announced on KMAN, the Junction City Commission approved the ordinance earlier this summer, which essentially bans drivers from talking on their cell phones while driving, unless its through a hands free device. The Junction City Police Department since that time has awaited the installation of signage around entrances to the City which notifies drivers of this new ordinance and to date have taken no enforcement action. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) State health official say whooping cough cases are increasing across Kansas, with Pottawatomie County particularly hard hit. KMAN has reporting on Pottawatomie County pertussis cases for the past several weeks, but the area county was just mentioned at the state level. The state has recorded 405 confirmed cases of the disease so far this year, compared with 172 in all of 2013. In Pottawatomie County 17 confirmed cases have been reported. A Manhattan woman was taken into custody by Riley County Police Wednesday morning on an arrest warrant for a variety of offenses. Aline Appelhanz, 47, was arrested at her home by police serving an arrest warrant for the offenses of burglary, making false writing, and theft at the felony level. A request was made by Director of Transportation, Doug Messer to purchase five new buses and dispose of five old buses, during Wednesday night’s Manhattan Ogden USD 383 school board meeting. Messer highlighted a new web site put together by the Kansas Department of Transportation that allows school districts to look into prices of buses from different companies, as well as view the features each bus has. But the president of Sterling, Kansas-based Jacam Chemical Co. says it was treating a customer’s well and is cooperating with the investigation.
