On Saturday afternoon a luncheon organized by Riley County Republicans featured candidates for state and national primary races. Some of the speakers at the event included Governor Sam Brownback and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach. According to Riley County Republicans chairman Lee Moddesitt the event is sometimes jokingly referred to as the “candidate fry”, and it certainly lived up to its name with one pair of candidates as they squared off against each other. Saturday provided a little bit of rain, and a lot of heat for the Riley County Fair. This year’s fair officially kicked off on Thursday with the first round of 4-H entry time slots. The parade down Poyntz Avenue took place at 6 p.m., and the first rodeo of the week began at 8 p.m. that evening. Judging began on Friday, with the woodworking judging, poultry judging, and sheep show judging. The other animal judging contests took place on Saturday morning. The Junction City Police Department issued a press release on Saturday, involving an incident that took place around 1:30 that morning. Officers responded to the area of 24 Riley Manor, in reference to a disturbance. While in route, a second call was receieved, requesting that an ambulance be dispatched to the same location for a person that had been run over by a truck. A subject was found lying in the area of 24 Riley Manor, and was quickly transported by ambulance to Geary Community Hospital. The sixth annual Furniture Amnesty Day event held Friday stayed cool under a large white tent that housed furniture donated from around the community. The purpose of the event is to help the community dispose of used furniture in a way that is beneficial to others. People were invited to come and register for a pick up time when they could find a piece of furniture to fit their needs. After 5pm the public was welcome to pick up whatever was left. The City of Manhattan is announcing a couple of road closures and repairs next week. Beginning Tuesday, North 17th Street will be closed from south of Laramie Street to Anderson Avenue for asphalt mill and overlay. The street will be closed for a 24-hour period. Thru traffic from Anderson Avenue to Poyntz Avenue will be detoured to 14th Street and Sunset Avenue. Travelers are encouraged to follow detour routes. Manhattan sales tax receipt numbers are down compared to the forecast. The latest numbers for July, which actually reflect two months prior, show $905,241 collected, which is $57,985 lower than the forecast and $32,521 less than the budget. Manhattan Finance Director Bernie Hayen describes the numbers as “somewhat monotonous,” indicating the sales tax reports have been up one month and down the next. Hayen adds the numbers are relatively “flat” when compared to 2012 and 2013, and says there is nothing to report in terms of any major retail shifts or changes. CLEVELAND (AP) The Cavaliers have signed No. 1 overall draft pick Andrew Wiggins, a contract that prevents him from being traded for 30 days. Wiggins has been linked to a possible blockbuster trade with Minnesota for All-Star forward Kevin Love. But any deal now involving Wiggins can’t be finalized for at least 30 days.
