The Kansas Supreme Court has affirmed convictions and the sentence of a former Fort Riley soldier in the shooting death of a Kansas National Guard member on Jan.1, 2012. The opinion regarding Daniel Parker, 28, was released Friday, March 6, and although the 13-page document does find the prosecutor in the case committed misconduct, it says the misconduct did not prejudice the jury against Parker and deny him a fair trial. A Fort Riley soldier waived his right to a preliminary hearing Friday morning. Alexander McConnell, 22, was set to appear in court in connection with a February 2014 case in which he is charged with murder in the first degree and child abuse following the death of a 5-week-old baby. An affidavit received by KMAN indicates the infant involved in the incident sustained substantial bleeding within the skull, abrasions on the head, neck and chest, a bruised lung, and a broken neck. A Belvue man has been bound over in a first degree murder case following a preliminary hearing Friday morning in Pottawatomie County Court. Christopher Arand, 36,  faces charges of first degree murder in connection with the November 2014 death of his uncle, Larry Arand of Belvue,  and felony cruelty to animals. K-State’s iSIS system has been renamed to KSIS, K-State Student Information System. Chief Information Officer Ken Stafford says while iSIS was named many years ago, the change is being made because of  concerns expressed over the current name and its link to a terrorist network. Stafford indicates university officials have checked with peers and many other universities using the term iSIS also are changing the name. FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) A Kansas man wanted in Riley County for alleged sexual exploitation of a child has been arrested in northern Arizona. The U.S. Marshals Service announced Thursday that 48-year-old John Thomas was taken into custody after leaving a Chino Valley home in a vehicle. Federal authorities say Thomas had dramatically changed his appearance but still was identified and arrested without incident. He was booked into the Yavapai County Jail, where he will be held pending extradition back to Riley County in Kansas. With a jury trial set for next week, Anthony Nichols appeared in Riley County District Court Thursday afternoon for a motion hearing. The Kansas City man is charged in connection with the first degree murder case where John Burroughs (68) was found dead in his residence back in September of 2013. Nichols appeared in Judge Meryl Wilson’s courtroom alongside his attorney, Jeff Wicks.
