Election season is here, and gubernatorial candidate Paul Davis says his campaign is in full swing as he travels around the state. Davis also serves as State House Minority Leader, and was in the area Thursday to address a number of groups. Davis made stops at the Association of School Superintendents’ meeting in Manhattan, the Kansas Farm Bureau, the Wamego Hospital, and in Junction City.  Davis says all across the state, both in rural and urban areas, people are concerned about public schools–with cuts he attributes to the Brownback administration. Riley County Police responded to a complaint of burglary in the 15,000 block of Homestead Road in Riley on Wednesdqay at approximately 9:10 PM. Debra Hassman, 58, of Riley told police her unsecured home had been entered and items were removed. These items included several necklaces, rings, and jewelry totaling $3,450 in value. Currently officers are investigating the matter; however no arrests have been made at the time of this report. Those with information about this crime are asked to contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers.

Arraignments were held in Pottawatomie County District court earlier this week for a Missouri couple, arrested last week after a two-county vehicular chase. Ashley Gillispie, 28, of Higbee, Missouri faces a preliminary hearing on June 23rd and Jason Gillispie, 30, is set for a status hearing June 17th. As KMAN reported last week, the chase began Wednesday afternoon after a traffic stop by a Pottawatomie County sheriff’s deputy on the Oregon Trail Road about three miles west of St. Mary’s. The Manhattan Military Relations Committee joined the Junction City Military Affairs Council and the AUSA Wednesday for a first-ever combined luncheon as part of Fort Riley’s Victory Week celebrations.
