Effective August 1st, Riley County Treasurer, Eileen King will retire.  After 29 years of service, King said she would like to have more time to travel with her husband to visit their kids and grandkids. King’s term is different from other elected positions, as her term is supposed to run through October of 2017.  The county Republican party will have to hold a precinct meeting in order to choose King’s successor. One of King’s reasons for choosing this time to retire is that she didn’t want to end her service in 2012 when the problems began with the state motor…

A woman that was found dead in her home in Florida late last month, as well as her son who is in custody as a potential suspect, both have local ties to Manhattan. The Gulf County Sheriff’s Office responded to Cape San Blas after receiving a 9-1-1 call.  Deputies found victim, 52 year old Renee Coffey unresponsive in her home.  Later arrested was Jarrod Powell Slick (23), who also faces arson and burglary charges from two incidents back in December of 2012. KMAN has confirmed that Coffey was previously an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Kansas State University and Slick attended Manhattan High School.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) Former Riley County and K-State standout Jordy Nelson says he would prefer to sign another extension with the Green Bay Packers before the season rather than playing out the final year of his contract. Nelson caught a career-high 85 passes for a career-best 1,314 yards with eight touchdowns last season. He said Tuesday he’s not sure the team and his agent have had substantive talks about a contract extension. Nelson signed a three-year, $13.9 million extension in 2011.

LOUIS (AP) Eric Hosmer hit a tiebreaking single off closer Trevor Rosenthal in the ninth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-7 Tuesday night for their second straight road victory in the four-game, two-city series. Rookie Kolten Wong’s first career home run was a grand slam in the second that ended the Cardinals’ 20-inning scoreless drought and gave them an early four-run cushion. The defending National League champions finished a dismal 2-7 homestand when their pitchers faltered. It was a banner year for the Manhattan High baseball team, a school record 22 victories, a Centennial League championship, and a 3rd place finish in the 6A state tournament. Indians’ head man Don Hess was named the Centennial League Coach of the Year on Tuesday. MHS junior Jesse Steinbring was named the league’s pitcher of the year and was one of five Indians named to the all-Centennial first team.
