As KMAN has previously reported, Ogden Elementary School was chosen as a national “Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing” school and received a blue ribbon honor. The blue ribbon school gala was held Friday evening at the Ogden Community Center. The event recognized the efforts from students, families, faculty and staff, and featured music, food and fellowship.
State budget issues, the Kansas highway fund, education and water were just a few of the topics covered during Saturday morning’s legislative coffee held at Sunset Zoo. Four area legislators participated in the event: Representative of the 51st District, Ron Highland; 66th District Representative, Sydney Carlin; 51st District Representative, Ron Highland; and 67th District Representative, Tom Phillips. Each of the four individuals provided a brief opening statement about the current issues they are facing in the legislature. The Manhattan High basketball teams were in a tough environment on Friday night at Hayden High school where Centennial League title implications were on the line in both the girls’ and boys’ games. The Manhattan High girls (14-4, 8-3) led after one quarter 11-5, but after that it was all Hayden. MHS was outscored 25-9 in the second quarter as the Wildcats (12-5, 7-4) took a 30-20 lead at the half and they would hold on for the 58-52 win. It was the 90th anniversary of the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce, and it pulled out all the stops to celebrate the occasion at the Hilton Garden Inn Convention Center on Friday night. A large cake topped with “90” dominated the center of the banquet hall as local business leaders, politicians, and other community leaders joined together to celebrate the achievements in 2014. New leaders were welcomed to the chamber board, and old members were thanked for their service. A man facing charges for allegedly taking part in an aggravated robbery and kidnapping incident waived his right to a preliminary hearing Friday morning. Kenneth Mallet appeared in front of Judge William Malcolm in connection with an incident reported in the 1300 block of Flint Hills Place this past October. During a preliminary hearing of another defendent in the case, it was indicated that Mallet duct-taped a victim’s hands, feet and mouth and assisted in ransacking an apartment. Mallet is charged with 6 counts, including aggravated kidnapping, aggravated robbery and attempted aggravated robbery, and his arraignment is set for March 2nd at 2:30 p.m.
