Soldiers from the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, are returning to Fort Riley following a successful nine-month deployment to Kuwait. The first group of Soldiers arrived on post earlier this month, with the remaining set to redeploy in large groups in the next few weeks. The entire brigade will return by late March. Several thousand Soldiers from the brigade departed for Southwest Asia in June. During the deployment, Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts, then-Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and Gen. Riley County Police arrested an Ogden man on a warrant for a motion to revoke probation or parole. Marquay Haralson, 21, was taken into custody Thursday afternoon at approximately 2:40 PM on the warrant, with the original offense of possession of marijuana. Haralson’s bond was set at $10,000.

Transportation, education, economics, health, and housing were some of the topics covered in the community needs assessment survey results.  Riley County Senior Service Center Project Coordinator, Debbie Nuss presented on this item during the joint Riley County/Pottawatomie County/Manhattan City Commission meeting Thursday afternoon. Concerns/needs outlined within the county include affordable housing, growth, and government.  Housing issues were referenced several times within the plan, as the median housing price in Riley County is $174,900 and the state’s average is $129,500. House Bill 2296 is currently making it’s way through the legislative process.  The bill is expected to be discussed next week in Topeka. The bill involves requiring a vote from the public in regards to building financing.  As the Riley County Commission recently approved the formation of a public building commission, this could impact them.
