The City of Manhattan facilitated an open house discussion on flood plain safety Wednesday evening at the Manhattan Fire Department Headquarters. Updated 5a.m. Thursday: On April 16, 2014 at 10:06 PM, the Riley County Police Department received a report of an armed robbery which had occurred at Dollar General located at 2321 Tuttle Creek Blvd., Manhattan, Kansas. Information at this point is preliminary; however employees of the store described the suspect as: A black male, just under 6 feet tall, who was wearing a red sweatshirt and a ball cap with the American Flag spread across the bill.  The suspect was armed with a black semi-automatic handgun. “They won’t say it, but there is a large percentage of legislators who are opposed to public schools in general.  They’d much rather see it privatized.” This statement was made by Board member, Dave Colburn during Wednesday evening’s Manhattan Ogden USD 383 School Board, as the board discussed the due process bill. Darby Price is the second Manhattan High senior from the girls state tournament team to sign to play college basketball. Hours after teammate Par McNair signed with Hutchinson Community College to play basketball and soccer, Price signed her letter of intent to play basketball next season at Rockhurst University. “It’s a great amount of relief,” Price said. “It’s done and I can’t wait to start playing.” Price was the Centennial League player of the year this past season and was also named first team all-state after helping lead the Indians back to state for the second time in three years.…

The library received a grant to participate in this year’s World Book Night celebration on Wednesday, April 23. Library staff and volunteers will be giving out free books in Aggieville, Downtown Manhattan, and the Little Apple Brewery from 6:00 to 8:00 pm in effort to raise awareness about the library and its services. A pair of Manhattan high stand out athletes have signed their letters of intent to play collegiate athletics. Jessie Kujawa and Par McNair will be taking a step forward into the world of collegiate athletics. Jessie will be playing volleyball at Fort Hays State while Par will attend Hutchinson Community College to play both basketball and soccer. Jessie began her volleyball career in fourth grade.
