A man charged in a vehicular homicide case from last year entered a plea in Riley County District Court Monday afternoon. Daniel Nitchman (38) entered a plea of no contest during his court appearance in Chief Judge, Meryl Wilson’s courtroom. As KMAN’s previous story states-Nitchman was driving westbound on I-70 on September 8th of last year, when he fell asleep while driving, which caused him to leave the roadway.  Nitchman struck 31 year old Samantha Coleman, who had pulled her vehicle over on the side of the road and was waiting for assistance.  Coleman died at the scene. DETROIT (AP) Alex Gonzalez drove in the winning run in his Detroit debut, lining a single to left off Greg Holland in the ninth inning that gave the Tigers a 4-3 opening-day victory over the Kansas City Royals on Monday. Acquired by Detroit following an injury to shortstop Jose Iglesias, Gonzalez made a costly error in Kansas City’s three-run fourth but made up for that with a tying triple in the seventh. Only a few months before Kansas Department of Agriculture employees begin to move into the new building at Research Park off North Manhattan Avenue. Greg Lohrentz, Chief Operating Officer and C-F-O for the Kansas State University Foundation, updated Intergovernmental leaders in Manhattan Monday. A formal proclamation was presented during Monday’s Riley County Commission meeting, commemorating National Volunteer Week.  Commission Chair, Robert Boyd presented the proclamation to Manhattan Chamber of Commerce President, Lyle Butler. Area firefighters have been extremely busy this past weekend, with several grass fires, fueled by high winds.   Pottawatomie County firefighters reportedly had a large fire south of Olsburg around Dry Creek/Living Water Ranch–with eight to nine-thousand acres involved. Fort Riley and Riley county firefighters assisted Pottawatomie county forces with that fire that kept firefighters out all night Sunday.     Riley County Fire Chief Pat Collins adds his firefighters were out in full force–with 35-40 firefighters over the weekend, probably each working 20 to 30 hours. Perhaps it was the colder weather, but Manhattan sales tax receipt numbers went down in March, which actually reflect two months prior, or January.   Manhattan Finance Director Bernie Hayen released the numbers Monday morning, indicating sales tax numbers of $813,574, which is the lowest in the last three years. The amount collected in 2012 was about $892,087 , with  $874,400 collected in 2013.   The 2014 numbers are $78,314 lower than the forecasted amount of nearly $891,888 and $63,030 lower than the 2014 budget projection of $824,068. The Kansas Basketball Coaches’ Association named six area girls to their all-state teams.  Manhattan High senior Darby Price was tabbed first team all-state after a stellar four-year career, and Indian teammate Caroline Ballard received honorable mention following her junior campaign.  Wamego sisters Kaylee and Lanie Page led the Lady Raiders to a 4A state runner-up finish to back up a state title run in 2013, and both were picked first team all-state.  Riley County finished 21-2 this season, and senior Madison Vargo was chosen 3A first team all-state, while fellow Falcon senior Katelyn Thomson got honorable mention. A 31-year-old Junction City man died in a Sunday motorcycle accident in Wyandotte County.   The Kansas Highway Patrol reports Justin Williams was northbound on highway 73 on his 1999 Harley Davidson when for an unknown reason the motorcycle left the roadway, went into the center grass median, and rolled. Williams was wearing a helmet and originally was taken to the Overland Park Regional Hospital.   The accident was reported shortly after 8:30 Sunday night, with Williams death confirmed at 4:40 this (Monday) morning.
