The Manhattan High girls basketball team opened up the 19th annual Mid America Classic at McPherson in convincing fashion with a 60-24 win in the first round over Hays. The Tribe defense was key throughout the ballgame, forcing 18 first half turnovers and a total of 30 in the game. MHS was paced by Darby Price with a stout double-double; 14 points and 14 rebounds. Updated:Friday morning Names and vehicle information were provided overnight by the Kansas Highway Patrol, regarding Thursday evening’s accident two miles north of Manhattan on Highway 24. KHP confirms the accident, which occurred shortly before five p.m., occurred when a 2009 Toyota Corrola driven by Carson Faessler, 19, of Lodgepole, Nebraska was eastbound and went left of center, striking a 2004 Dodge Dakota head on. 4:30 p.m.- The Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to 729 Brierwood Drive early Thursday afternoon for a report of a structure fire. Upon arrival, crews found a two-story residence with smoke and flames coming through the roof. The fire was contained to the attic within 30 minutes of the initial alarm assignment. Crews responded with 5 fire apparatus and 17 firefighters, with the last units still on scene at roughly 3:30 p.m. Brierwood Drive was closed for several hours due to the fire. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)   The Royals acquired outfielder Carlos Peguero from the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday for a player to be named or cash. The 26-year-old Peguero has spent parts of the last three seasons with Seattle. He is a career .195 hitter with nine home runs and 27 RBIs in 219 at-bats in the majors. Kansas City also designated left-handed pitcher Everett Teaford for assignment. Teaford made one appearance for the Royals in 2013.
