UPDATE #2 (6:17 AM TUESDAY) – The Kansas Highway Patrol is reporting that 72-year-old Robert Cleveland of Junction City was killed in the accident on Monday. The accident occurred when Cleveland’s 1996 Toyota Tacoma traveling westbound on I-70 blew its front driver side tire and veered into the Eastbound lane striking a 2023 Ford Bronco Sport head-on. The driver of the Bronco, 45-year-old Robert George of Fowler, Colorado and 48-year-old passenger Crystal Cloninger of Canon City, Colorado were both injured in the accident. By Megan Moser/Manhattan Mercury An investigation has found probable cause to file criminal charges against the former Marion County police chief who last year raided the local newspaper office, which was investigating claims against him. That’s from a report by prosecutors tasked with investigating the case, including Riley County Attorney Barry Wilkerson and Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett. Law enforcement officers on Aug. 11, 2023, searched the newspaper office as well as publisher and editor Eric Meyer’s home, seizing computers and cell phones. Riley County Police filed a report for a vehicle burglary over the weekend in Manhattan. Officers filed the report just before 7:30 a.m. on Friday morning in the 500 block of Richards Drive listing a 59-year-old male as the victim. The victim’s truck was reportedly broken into the night before by an unknown subject and approximately $5,000 of plumbing tools were taken. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers.

The Manhattan Running Company hosted “Nike Spike Night” on Friday evening where Nike representatives and college athletes met with local youth ahead of cross county season. A Nebraska man is currently behind bars in the Riley County Jail after being arrested Saturday evening. Joseph Michael Thomas Bruce, of Bennington, was arrested around 6:30 p.m. Saturday for failure to appear regarding a separate theft case. Last week, the 37-year-old Bruce was arrested for deceptive commercial practice and also attempted theft valued at between $1,500 to $25,000. His total bond for all three charges is set at $75,000 and was still confined in the RCJ as of Sunday.
