Keats, University Park and Leonardville all need new tornado sirens, according to Emergency Management Director, Pat Collins.  During Thursday’s Riley County Commission meeting, Collins explained that the University Park siren needs to be replaced first, as it is the most problematic. Collins researched this topic years ago, and provided a cost estimate.  Every year, the cost has increased.  For this reason, the siren price now stands at $20,170.78. Updated 8:00 p.m. Thursday: The Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to 3114 Gary Avenue for a report of a structure fire at about noon Thursday. Upon arrival, crews found a two-story single family residence owned by Jeanette Cukjati of Girard, with smoke and fire visible from the roof. Firefighters made entry into the structure, performed a search and attempted to control the fire from the interior of the building. The following is an announcement from the Manhattan Regional Airport: Due to construction passengers will see a significant change to the terminal traffic flow and parking availability beginning January 15th. Vehicles entering the airport loop road are prevented from driving in front of the terminal. The Riley County Police Department dispatch received a call Thursday morning about an individual injured at a logging job site located in the 1900 block of Collins Lane, just south of Manhattan.When police and EMS arrived on scene, they found a deceased male who had been struck by a falling tree. The male was later identified as David G. Teske, 47, of Onaga. Alto Jack Robert Johns, 42, of St. George was taken into custody Wednesday night on a failure to appear warrant. Johns’ bond was set at $10,000. Richard Burke Jones Junior, 39, of Manhattan was arrested on a warrant for probation violation, and his bond was set at $5,000. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Authorities in Sedgwick County say a Wichita man suspected of impersonating a deputy was arrested after calling 911 to say his pickup truck had been stolen. KAKE-TV reports the incident began around 1 a.m. Wednesday when a man driving a pickup truck with a siren and red-and-blue lights stopped another driver, who was a security guard. The two men got out of their vehicles and asked each other for identification. The security guard became suspicious and drove away with the phony deputy in pursuit. OSKALOOSA, Kan. (AP) A fire in the northeast Kansas town of Oskaloosa damaged three businesses and a Masonic Lodge but no injuries were reported. The fire Monday night extensively damaged a cafe and realty office and did minor smoke damage to a bank branch. Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Herrig says the Masonic Lodge about the cafe also was damaged. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but Herrig said it apparently started in the basement of the cafe. The Lawrence Journal-World reports no damage estimates were available Tuesday.
