The Clay County Hospital Foundation recently announced that it is just over $50,000 away from achieving its planned fundraising goal of $3.8 million. This fundraising effort is to support the new expansion at Clay County Medical Center which is an ambitious project that includes the construction of a 6,765 square-foot addition, featuring a new mental health clinic. The foundation has already sold out all sponsorable rooms in the new mental health clinic and clinic addition. The foundation is also focused on raising an additional $300,000 to cover other essential equipment.

Manhattan commissioners passed a $16.98 million build agreement for CiCo Park improvements Tuesday night on a vote of four to one. The Department of Justice recently announced that Douglas Edward Robertson of Olathe, Kansas, the former vice president of “KanRus” Trading Company pleaded guilty Tuesday for his role in a conspiracy to circumvent U.S. export laws by filing false export forms with the U.S. government and continuing to sell and export controlled avionics equipment to customers in Russia without the required licenses from the U.S. Department of Commerce. Jail captain Mark French on Monday told county commissioners the 147-bed correctional facility has an average daily population of about 114 inmates, and sometimes, that number gets up to 120. “We’re pretty maxed out when it comes to the classification system,” French said. Functioning as the Board of County Health, the Riley County commission on Monday unanimously approved both personnel requests from health department administrator Julie Gibbs. The county will use opioid settlement money to fund the community health educator through 2025. A portion of Casement Road closed for repairs Monday while southern access to North Martin Luther King Dr. Drive reopened to traffic. The Manhattan street division shut down Casement Road between Allen Road and Dix Drive for concrete panel replacement, and officials expect the closure to remain in place until at least July 26, depending on the weather. Details of the budget had been ironed out during a work session the previous week. For the first time since 2010, the county will see a decrease in assessed valuation. That valuation is determined by real property values, personal property values, and state assessed utilities. Plans to open a Hawaiian Bros restaurant may be back on track. Hawaiian Bros Island Grill, Kansas City, Mo.-based chain, submitted plans to the Manhattan city government to open in the former Panera Bread building at 325 E. Poyntz Ave. in 2022. Since then, the building has sat vacant with no visible changes. But passersby last week noticed a “coming soon” sign in front of the building.
