Colton Kalmus pitched five strong innings, and K-State closer Jake Matthys went the rest of the way, earning a rare, four-inning save in a 3-2 victory over Wichita State on Tuesday night at Tointon Family Stadium.  Kalmus gave up just two hits, and one earned run, a solo homer by the Shockers’ Garrett Bayliff in the fourth innning.  Matthys struck out five, and scattered five hits and two walks over his four scoreless frames.  K-State got on the board first when RJ Santigate knocked in two runs with a single in the bottom of the first.  Wichita State scored an unearned…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) James Loney hit an RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Tampa Bay Rays over the Kansas City Royals 1-0 on Tuesday night. Loney’s grounder to right scored Wil Myers, who snapped an 0-for-15 slump when he reached on an infield single to start the ninth. Myers advanced on a two-out wild pitch by Greg Holland. Twin sisters often have an unbreakable bond, and after starring for four years at Riley County, Madison and Makayla Vargo will carry on their basketball careers together at Washburn University. The Vargos plan to ink their national letters of intent with the Lady Blues next week, following a 22-2 senior campaign that included another trip to the 3A state tournament. Madison and Makayla were both on the all Mid-East League first team this past season, while Madison was also named first team 3A all-state after averaging 18 points per game during her senior season.

Named to the all-Big 12 freshman team last fall, K-State setter Katie Brand has been selected to participate in the US  Collegiate National volleyball team program. Brand earned the spot at a tryout in February, and is one of 36 athletes that will train and compete at the Junior National Championships from June 22nd – July 1st in Minneapolis. Brand is among three players chosen to represent the Big 12 conference on the team. The Manhattan City Commission and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board met Tuesday to further scrutinize potential renovations to Peace Memorial Auditorium, and the addition of new Parks and Rec offices to City Hall.
