TOPEKA, KS> According to U.S. Attorney, Barry Grissom, A Topeka man has pleaded guilty on Friday to federal bank fraud charges in connection with a plan to build an apartment complex in Junction City. John Wyatt Duncan, Jr., 52, Topeka, Kan., pleaded guilty to two counts of bank fraud, one count of money laundering and one count of making false statements in documents required by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). According to the Riley County Police Department, a 3rd person has been arrested in connection with the September 8th murder of John Burroughs,68, of Manhattan. Anthony Stephen Nichols, 33, of  Kansas City, Kansas was arrested at approximately 4:00 PM on Friday and charged with first degree murder, by the Riley County Police Department Investigations Division and the Junction City Police Department. Nichols was also arrested on Wednesday night in connection with the September 7th murder of Anthony D. Nixon. Two local residents who were arrested and charged with the first degree murder of John Burroughs, 68, made their first appearance in Riley County District Court, Friday afternoon. Christina Love, 49, of Manhattan and James McKenith, 33, also of Manhattan, were each appointed an attorney during their first appearance in Judge Meryl Wilson’s court room. KMAN has learned that former Ft. Riley Soldier 30-year old George Ferenz, was found guilty of two counts Aggravated Criminal Sodomy and two counts Aggravated Indecent Liberties with a Child. He was denied bond and immediately arrested, taken into custody. The verdict was handed down in Judge Meryl Wilson’s court room Thursday, after 5 hours of Jury deliberation. The Sentencing hearing was scheduled for October 21st at 1:15 p.m.

MHS East Campus will conduct a “School Safety Week”,  September 16 – 19. The purpose of this week is to plan and prepare for certain emergency situations. We can never prepare for every scenario, but training and exercising drills puts us all in a better position to respond should an actual event occur. A resurfacing project will begin on Monday, September 16, weather permitting, on a 20-mile stretch of K-16 from the K-13/K-99 junction at the city of Blaine in Pottawatomie County, west to the U.S. 77 junction just north of the city of Randolph in Riley County. Project work includes a 1-inch surface mill and a 1.5-inch asphalt overlay on all mainline lanes. The resurfacing project will smooth the road and fill surface defects that can shorten pavement life.
