Kansas State University’s first Landon Lecture of 2014 will feature John Skipper, president of ESPN Inc. and co-chairman of Disney Media Networks, as well as three prominent figures in collegiate athletics. The lecture will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, in McCain Auditorium.   Hard to believe with snow on the ground, but it’s that time of the year again. It’s Severe Weather Awareness Week and Riley County Emergency Management Coordinator Laurie Harrison tells KMAN it’s a good week to get ready for severe weather that often strikes, beginning this time of year.  She encourages folks to review severe weather plans for home, school, and work.   The state drill is 1:30 Tuesday afternoon.  Harrison says sirens will be set off locally and the Iris alert will be activated, weather permitting.  Fort Riley Emergency Manager Chris Hallenbeck says Severe Weather awareness week this week…

Two people were injured in an early morning accident in Geary county.   The Kansas Highway patrol reports a 2011 International Semi-tractor was westbound on I-70 nine miles east of Junction City and for an unknown reason entered the median. The driver, identified as 29 year old Courage Gbobo, 29, of Florida, attempted to steer back onto the roadway but the vehicle overturned and came to rest in the median.   Gbobo was taken to Geary Community Hospital for treatment. Phil Forte scored 23 points and Marcus Smart playing in his last home game added 18 as Oklahoma State used a late first half run to surge ahead and never look back in a 77-61 victory over Kansas State Monday night in Stillwater. After Shane Southwell’s three-point basket gave the Wildcats a 22-15 lead with 9:38 left in the first half, the Cowboys outscored K-State 20-5 the rest of the way and led 35-27 at intermission. The Kansas State Women’s Basketball team wrapped up regular season play Monday night with three Seniors, Chantay Caron, Ashlynn Knoll and Katya Leick all playing their final home games in Bramlage Coliseum and for a while it looked like they would go out winners. However, sluggish second half shooting and a critical turnover in the game’s final 15 seconds allowed TCU to escape with a 51-46 victory. K-State led by as much as six points in the first half and held a 30-26 advantage at halftime, but their recent shooting woes resurfaced during the early stages of the second half…

A total of five bids were submitted to the Riley County Commission for herbicides for the noxious weed department.  Commissioner, Dave Lewis opened each bid individually and read them aloud. The five companies to submit bids were: Red River Specialties of Augusta, Van Diest Supply Company of Lindsborg, CPS of Castle Rock, CO, Helena Chemical Company of Shawnee, Sims Fertilizer and Chemical of Osborne. Each company submitted bids for different herbicides, including 2, 4-D LV Ester and 2,4-D Amine.
