Last month, USD 383 submitted it’s Kingdergarten Preschool Program continuation funding applications for the 2014-2015 to the Kansas Department of Education. Executive Director of Special Education/Special Services, Debora Howser presented the item, which proposed the creation of a Director of Early Education Programs position. The board approved the addition of the position 6-0. Shots rang out at Ft. Hood, Texas late Wednesday afternoon, a stark reminder of a similar incident that occurred in 2009 that left 13 people dead. Multiple reports indicate four people are dead including the alleged gunman who has been identified as 34-year old Ivan Lopez who reportedly was a soldier. Preliminary media reports in Texas say that the shooting may have been the result of a dispute between soldiers. DETROIT (AP) Under last year’s rules, the Kansas City Royals would have had men on first and third with two out in the 10th inning of a tie game. Instead, their rally ended after a replay review but that was OK with manager Ned Yost. “That’s exactly why the system is there to get the call right,” Yost said. The Royals ended up losing 2-1 to the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday when Ian Kinsler hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th. A 43-year-old Kansas Department of Corrections inmate who has been serving time for second degree murder in a Riley County case since 1990 is due for a public comment session and possible parole. John Moss was sentenced in July of 1990 and is currently at the Hutchinson central correctional facility. Public comment sessions are set for Moss’ case and several others May seventh at the Finney State Office Building in Wichita, May 12th at Kansas City’s City Hall, and May 16th at the Municipal Court House in Topeka. Kansas State University students Max Goering, senior in mathematics, McPherson, and Christine Spartz, junior in chemistry, Ellington, Conn., are the university’s newest Barry M. Goldwater scholars. Established by the U.S. Congress in 1986 to honor Sen. Barry M. Goldwater from Arizona, the scholarship is awarded to approximately 300 college students across the country every year. Awardees receive up to $7,500 annually for college-related expenses. With 71 Goldwater scholars to date, Kansas State University ranks first among the nation’s 500 state-supported universities for the most Goldwater scholars.
