The Manhattan Fire Department was called out Tuesday evening for the report of smoke coming from the Manhattan Walmart store’s lawn and garden center. Crews arrived around 5:30 p.m. and noticed multiple flashing lights inside and outside of the store. A motor issue on the roof was found to be the source of the smoke and firefighters quickly isolated the problem. The store was evacuated and no injuries were reported. Evergy was called out to restore power, but the store remained closed through much of the evening. A damage estimate has not been provided.

A Manhattan woman’s car was sold without her permission Monday, according to the Riley County Police Department. A 53-year-old woman told police the incident happened after a 33-year-old man known to her sold the car without asking her. The estimated total loss is around $3,000. The car was recovered later Monday evening by the Junction City Police Department.

A Manhattan chiropractor was arrested Monday on a Riley County warrant in relation to alleged sex crimes. Clark Petersen is charged with 16 counts of sexual battery and one count each of rape, aggravated sexual battery and lewd and lascivious behavior. All told, five women allege the incidents occurred at his Manhattan chiropractic office between 2018 and 2022. The victims range in age between 37 and 59. Petersen remains jailed on a $300,000 bond. Petersen was also arrested in late June and charged with a single count of rape after a 49-year-old woman alleged an incident from July 2022. An…
The Pottawatomie County Commission approved the 2024 budget and exceeding the revenue neutral rate during their Monday meeting. Despite a .779 mill levy decrease, the county will still see an additional $49,000 in ad valorem taxes following the assessed valuation increase of just over $22 million. This year’s budget includes a nearly $1.5 million increase in expenditures with the inclusion of a 5% COLA and the addition of four new staffing positions. Officers filed a report for distribution of a controlled substance, aggravated battery, and criminal threat (adulterating or contaminating a beverage) in the 2000 block of College View Rd. in Manhattan on August 26, 2023, at approximately 1:00 a.m. 17-year-old, 18-year-old, and two 19-year-old females were listed as the victims when it was reported an 18-year-old female suspect contaminated their alcoholic beverages with an unknown substance at a party.
