A Manhattan man charged with the killing of a Fort Riley soldier, and the shooting of four others was in Riley County Court on Monday morning via video conference from jail. 43-year-old Mathew Wilson is charged with possible first degree murder, four counts of attempted first degree murder, and aggravated burglary. May has been declared as Mental Health Month, at least in Pottawatomie County. During Monday’s meeting, the commission reviewed the proclamation and unanimously approved the motion to sign the declaration. Monday’s Riley County Commission meeting featured a short agenda, but a request was made for approval on a Family Planning grant.  Health Department Office Manager, Paula Pederson mentioned the grant would cover training for the new director, once one is appointed to the job. Commission Chair, Dave Lewis commented, “this sounds like a no brainer to me”.  Although Commissioner, Robert Boyd was absent, Commissioner Lewis and Commissioner Ron Wells approved the grant. KMAN has received word of an incident that took place in Riley last night involving EMS and police SWAT teams. Riley County Public information officer Matt Droge issued a statement Monday morning that the incident took place in Riley last night was reported as a possible type of chemical suicide that often includes a barricaded subject in a vehicle ending their life by deadly fumes. Precautions were taken since there was  a possibility that this could be the case. If these precautions were not taken, these  fumes could harm first responders as well . After an impressive 9-0 win the first game of Sunday’s split doubleheader, things went just the opposite way for the Kansas City Royals in Sunday’s second game. Former Royal Mike Aviles torched his former team with a career-high five runs batted in three of them on a home run as Cleveland bounced back for a 10-3 victory on Sunday evening to snap Kansas City’s three-game winning streak. The Kansas Highway patrol worked a couple of accidents in Riley county this past weekend, one which resulted in three people requiring hospitalization.  Loren Gray (64) and  Ningbo Li (32), both of Manhattan, and  Larissa Gibb (31) of Lee’s Summit, Missouri were injured in an accident on highway 77 nearly two miles north of highway 24 shortly before nine Sunday night. Gibb was driving a 2009 Nissan Versa northbound on highway 77, with a 1987 Chevy pickup  driven by Gray southbound. Gibb’s Nissan went left of center into the southbound lane. K-State partnered with PSC Environmental Inc. to provide a free e-waste collection on Saturday morning. K-State students and Manhattan area residents unplugged their old appliances, TVs, cell phones etc., and dropped them off for proper recycling. Howie’s Trash Service will sort the e-waste, and send it out to two different certified recycling plants for complete processing. “The monitors and TVs with the glass in them, they’ll go to one recycler down in Texas, and then all the other things go to another recycler… they’re certified recyclers.
