He notes that the city is working diligently to address street projects. The city says phase 2 of the Browning Avenue project will begin on Monday with side connections to be completed this week.

Riley County Police are investigating a pair of incidents involving lost or stolen property. Officers filed a theft by deception report Monday evening in Manhattan after a 23-year-old woman reported she sent a $500 deposit to a 25-year-old male suspect to buy a dog. She never received the dog or her money back. Officers also filed a report for theft or lost or mislaid property in the 100 block of South 3rd Street. A state grant totaling $2.35 million has been awarded to start a Childcare Business Accelerator project in Manhattan. The project is a collaborative effort by the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation, the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce and Ascension Via Christi. A total of $2.1 million will be dedicated to constructing a new facility, with $250,000 dedicated to programmatic expenses. The accelerator grant was made possible by the Kansas Office of Recovery – SPARK health and education initiatives funding for childcare capital improvements and Kansas Department for Children and Families Children’s Cabinet Trust Fund. A Manhattan man was arrested Monday on a Riley County warrant for probation violation. According to the Riley County Police Department, the warrant against 27-year-old Erick Chavez stems from original charges of child endangerment, interference with parental custody and domestic battery. Chavez was also arrested for interference with law enforcement, and drug possession charges after police say he fled from officers on a bicycle and on foot. He was apprehended in the 1000 block of Kearney Street. He remains jailed on a $15,000 bond.
Kansas State University says Saturday’s open house for the Tracz Family Band Hall has been postponed. The event will be rescheduled at a later date. The band hall, named for longtime director of bands Dr. Frank Tracz, is located in the northwest wing of the World War I Memorial Stadium. The location places the marching band indoor rehearsal space adjacent to their outdoor rehearsal space. The band will utilize the new space this year.
Manhattan City Commissioners will consider entering into a $2.9 million contract to finance road construction in the north campus corridor. The contract is being proposed after KDOT recently announced it will not start a planned roundabout project at US 24 and K-113 Seth Child Road until 2025, rather than next year as initially planned. Saben Williams, 18, of Manhattan was arrested on July 17, 2023, around 8:15 a.m. on his Riley County District Court warrant for failure to appear. This warrant stems from original charges of domestic battery and two counts of violation of a protection order. The Pottawatomie County Attorney’s Office will be closing the week of July 31 through Aug. 4 as staff undergo training on new computer software. Sherri Schuck detailed the closure in her update to commissioners Monday morning. Schuck says her office will connect with law enforcement agencies so they still have points of contact for prosecutors. Emails and voicemails to the county attorney’s office will be returned.
