Former K-State All-American high jumper Erik Kynard finished fifth in the high jump final with a mark of 7 feet, 7.25 inches at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow. Along with being selected as an All-American in both the indoor and outdoor high jump, he became the first person to win three consecutive Big 12 outdoor high jump titles. He concluded his Wildcat career as an eight-time All-American, six-time Big 12 Champion and two-time NCAA Champion. The Riley County Police Department and the Kansas State University Police Department are cautioning the K-State community and the general public about walking alone at night after a sexual assault was reported in the early morning hours of August 11, 2013. It was reported that a rape occurred in Manhattan near campus by an unknown suspect. This case is currently under investigation by RCPD according to Public Information Officer Matthew Droge. As of the end of last week the new K-63 Bridge over Vermillion Creek in Pottawatomie County was completed and the bridge was OPENED to all traffic. Crews still have some finishing work to complete such as seeding and mulching, which will have little to no impact on traffic.
With two quick motions and approvals, the Riley County 2014 approved budget was officially signed during Thursday morning’s county commission meeting. No members of the public were present for the public hearing, so no objections to the budget were expressed. Commissioner, Robert Boyd was absent for the hearing, so Commissioner, Ron Wells made the motion to sign, and both him and Commission Chair, Dave Lewis approved to sign. The Riley County Police Department has provided more details about an accident that occurred Wednesday night at the intersection of McCall Road and Tuttle Creek Boulevard. Michele Chavis, 34, of Riley was traveling southbound on Tuttle Creek Boulevard when she began to turn east onto McCall Road and struck a Chevy Impala driven by Raymond Emer, 51, of Manhattan. Chavis was checked by the Riley County EMS and was transported to Mercy Regional Health Center for complaints of neck and leg pains.
