BONNER SPRINGS, Kan. (AP) Police are awaiting autopsy results before determining how two people died in a hotel in a Kansas City suburb. A maid found the bodies of a man and woman inside one of the rooms Thursday at the Holiday Inn Express in Bonner Springs. KCTV5 reports police believe the deaths were a murder-suicide but will not make a final determination until autopsies are performed Friday. Police on scene said the two people were passing through town on their way from North Carolina to Seattle.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A 42-year-old Wichita man who kicked his girlfriend 20 to 30 times with steel-toed boots will be sentenced in August for first-degree murder in her death. A Sedgwick County jury on Thursday convicted Anson Bernhardt for the September death of Amber Kostner, 38, who was still breathing when Bernhardt left her on the side of a road in Wichita. The Wichita Eagle reports that during the trial, jurors watched Bernhardt admit the crime to sheriff’s deputies. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) A community celebration is scheduled for July 22 on the University of Kansas campus to mark the 90th birthday of former Kansas Sen. Bob Dole. The event will be held at the Dole Institute of Politics where the former Republican U.S. senator’s archives are housed. The institute opened in 2003. Dole is not expected to attend. Dole served in the U.S. Senate from 1969 until 1996, when he retired to run for president but lost to Democratic incumbent Bill Clinton. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Officials are reaching out to the public to promote the impact passenger rail service could have in Wichita. The issue is slated as the discussion topic at the Tuesday Topics program to be held at noon at the Wichita central library auditorium on Aug. 27. The Wichita Eagle reports the brown-bag lunch seminar will feature Wichita Vice Mayor Pete Meitzner and Dale Goter, the city’s government relations manager. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A Kansas doctor is returning to court in her legal fight to regain her medical license after state regulators revoked it over her referrals of young patients for late-term abortions. Attorneys for both Dr. Ann Kristin Neuhaus and the State Board of Healing Arts expected a hearing Friday in Shawnee County District Court to be the final one before Judge Franklin Theis rules. Neuhaus is appealing the board’s revocation of her license in July 2012. So far the Riley County commissioner has been able to reduce the proposed mill levy increase 1.9, which is quite different than the little over three mill levy numbers the group started out with Thursday. That’s thanks to a clerical error discovered during a work session Thursday afternoon.  A missed formula on an excel spreadsheet cell was found on Wednesday, and added a substantial boon for the mill levy reduction process. In the consolation round of the World University Games in Russia, K-State volleyball, representing Team USA, fell on Friday to Slovakia in three sets, 25-10, 25-18, and 25-19.  The Cats were competitive in both sets two and three before the Slovaks pulled away for the win. K-State was led by four kills each from Kaitlynn Pelger and Courtney Traxson.  The Cats blocked 16 balls as a team, topped by Taylor Johnson with five, and Chelsea Keating had four.  Pelger posted 12 digs, while Keating also reached double-digit digs with 10. For the second straight day, K-State senior Ty Zimmerman has been nominated for a national postseason award.  This time it’s the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the best defensive back in college football.  Zimmerman is the first Wildcat safety to be a candidate for the Thorpe Award since Jarrod Cooper in 2000.  The native of Junction City had five interceptions last season, all in Big 12 play, to go with 50 tackles including three for loss.  Nigel Malone was a semifinalist for the Thorpe in both 2011 and 2012. A number of former K-State football players are in town as the annual Wildcat Legends for Charity Weekend will be held to raise money for the No Stone Unturned Foundation. The foundation provides care for children with rare diseases, and will have a banquet and auction on Friday night at the K-State Alumni Center from 6:00 to 9:30pm.  The Legends Celebrity Golf Classic will be held Saturday at Colbert Hills with registration at 8:00am, and the teams will tee off at 9:00.
