OAKLEY, Kan. (AP) Seventy pheasant hunters joined Gov. Sam Brownback and other state officials over the weekend for the second annual Governor’s Ringneck Classic in northwestern Kansas. The city of Oakley hosted the event, with hunters taking to the fields near surrounding communities. Brownback began the hunt in 2011 as a way to promote tourism and expand the Kansas economy. Among those taking part were state Wildlife, Parks and Tourism Secretary Robin Jennison and former Kansas City Chiefs player Bill Maas.   Manhattan’s Flint Hills Discovery Center’s director has resigned. Bob Workman will be leaving to become director of the Ulrich Museum of Art at Wichita State University. Manhattan city manager Ron Fehr announced the resignation Wednesday afternoon, saying Workman has done a terrific job in bringing the Flint HIlls Discovery Center project through a very successful construction process, as well as assembling and leading an incredible team. Workman will stay at the Manhattan facility through mid-January and will assist with the national search for his replacement. Everyone is focused on the 2012 Wildcats, but K-State will will have a nice home field advantage next season.  Eight games at Bill Snyder Family Stadium highlight the Wildcats’ 2013 football schedule announced on Tuesday.  The non conference schedule features home games with North Dakota State, Louisiana and UMASS before opening the conference schedule with back-to-back road trips to Texas and Oklahoma State.  K-State will then play five of their next six games at home, starting with dates against Baylor, West Virginia and Iowa State.  After a tilt at Texas Tech, the Cats will host TCU and Oklahoma, followed by…

While K-State is spending Thanksgiving this season at the basketball mecca of Madison Square Garden, they’ll be eating turkey in paradise in 2014.  The Cats will be in the field of the Maui Invitational two years from now, with a loaded field featuring seven teams who reached the postseason last winter.  Arizona, BYU, Missouri, Pittsburgh, Purdue, and San Diego State join host Chaminade in the tournament.  The Division II Silverswords did knock off fellow Big 12 member Texas in this season’s Maui Invitational.

With a 16-6 run early in the second half, Kansas State opened its 2012-13 road schedule with a 62-47 win over Tennessee State on Tuesday night. The Wildcats, who improved to 3-0 for the seventh time in the last nine seasons, were led by sophomore guard Haley Texada, who poured in a career-high off the bench. Sheldon McClellan banked in a putback jumper with 25.9 seconds left to put Texas within two points, but J.T. Terrell made two free throws on the next possession to seal the win for the Trojans.
