TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A task force formed by Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback is preparing to open discussions about finding ways to reduce childhood poverty. The task force was having its first meeting Monday in Topeka. The 12-member group includes Brownback’s secretaries of health and environment, children and families, and aging and disability services. Kansas first lady Mary Brownback is serving as an adviser.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The Kansas Department of Labor is preparing to release a fresh look at the state’s economy. The agency says its report on October’s unemployment rate will be announced Monday. The state’s jobless rate has been on the way down recently, falling to 5.9 percent in September from 6.2 percent in August and 6.7 percent in September 2011. September’s figure marked the first time since December 2008 that Kansas unemployment was below 6 percent.
Talk has been going on about a bridge that connects the two counties of Pottawatomie and Wabaunsee. Now the two commissions are moving forward together to make some decisions. At Monday’s Pottawatomie County Commission meeting, Wabaunsee commissioners and residence were in attendance to discuss the options available for the bridge. The three original were presented to the Wabaunsee commission as they were already given at the Pottawatomie County Commission at their last meeting. K-State Police are investigating weekend thefts of computer equipment, amounting to more than $10,000 in loss. K-State Police responded Sunday to Seaton Hall for a report of computers and computer equipment stolen from rooms in the building. Mac computers along with monitors and other computer hardware were stolen between the hours of 4:00 and 9:00 Sunday evening. It took more than an hour to come to some kind of agreement, but after several minutes of discussion, Riley County Law board members finally decided to plan on a special meeting in the near future, after more detailed numbers have come in regarding health insurance coverage. Riley County Police Director Brad Schoen told the group there is a time crunch, but it’s difficult as some of the bids, and information about possible state coverage, are not yet in. The bid opening for the Lakeside Sewer Benefit District took place at Monday’s Riley County Commission meeting, and only one bid was submitted. The bid came out of J and K Contracting in Junction City, and was set at $116,844. With the engineer’s estimate at $87,515, this bid was much higher than expected. The commission approved moving the bids forward to Public Works staff for recommendations. As of Tuesday, the new main driver’s license station will be open for business, even though the official ribbon cutting ceremony is not until Wednesday. A child is taken into protective custody on suspicion of aggravated battery. Police told reporters on Monday that on the morning of November 14th, a three month old baby was taken to Mercy Regional Health center with possible head injuries. The child was then transferred to Stormont Vail hospital in Topeka. Staff at the hospital suspected that battery had taken place and contacted the Topeka police department. The Kansas Social and Rehabilitative Services agency was contacted and the case was referred to the Riley County police department. Around 3:00 p.m. Sunday, 39 year old Arano Chavez of Manhattan, reported that his three year old son had been taken by the child’s mother in violation of a court order. The child is Benjamin Antonio Chavez-Birdwell who is 3’3″,and weighs 50 pounds. He is believed to be with Sonja Karin Birdwell- a white female, 5’01” and weighs 140 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. Fort Riley authorities announced Monday the deaths of two 1st Infantry Division Soldiers this past Friday in Pakktika Province in Afghanistan. Sgt. Channing Hicks, 24, and Specialist Joseph Richardson, 23, were killed when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device and small arms fire. Both Soldiers were infantrymen assigned to 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley. Hicks was originally from Greer, South Carolina and joined the Army in June 2006. He previously served two deployments to Iraq with the 1st Infantry Division.
