Mitt Romney’s mission in this election: connect with Americans on a personal level. He sought to do so Thursday by appealing to feelings of anxiety rippling through the electorate as the nation faces an uncertain economy.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Jeremy Guthrie pitched effectively into the eighth inning and Alex Gordon homered to lead the Kansas City Royals over the Detroit Tigers 2-1 Thursday night for a three-game sweep. Prince Fielder had three hits for the slumping Tigers, who remained three games behind the first-place Chicago White Sox in the AL Central. The teams begin an important three-game series Friday night in Detroit. Guthrie (3-3), who did not give up a hit to the White Sox until the eighth inning on Aug. 19 in his previous Kauffman Stadium start, held Detroit to one run on 10…
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback’s administration will sponsor meetings in 12 cities next month on its plans to overhaul the state’s Medicaid program. Administration officials say the meetings are designed to educate Medicaid participants and health care providers about the coming changes. The $2.9 billion-a-year program covers medical services for the poor, disabled and elderly. Brownback plans to turn management of the entire Medicaid program over to three private insurance companies beginning in January. The first meetings will be held Sept. 24 in Manhattan, Pittsburg, Colby and Dodge City. Other sessions will be held Sept. 25 in Atchison,…
LECOMPTON, Kan. (AP) Officials at a northeastern Kansas propane facility say there’s no reason to be alarmed by large flames shooting out of the plant. Motorists reported seeing fire shooting into the air Wednesday at the Heetco plant near Lecompton. Branch manager Gregg White told the Lawrence Journal-World the flames are part of a project to replace relief valves on the facility’s 20 propane tanks. White says vaporized gas has to be burned out of the tanks to remove pressure before anyone can work on them. The valves have to be replaced about every 10 years. White says the project…
During Thursday’s Riley County Commissioner meeting, Riley County Planning and Development Director, Monty Wedel, expressed concern regarding the new MPO map. The map includes Fort Riley, and although this will help in terms of coordination, this does not help the budget. By adding Fort Riley’s population in to Riley County, this in turn makes the budget increase as well. When looking at MPO map number two, Riley County would be paying $19,775 over the five year period. But the addition of Fort Riley would result in Riley County paying $53,000 over the five year period. Riley County Commissioners also heard…
When K-State matches up with Missouri State this Saturday night in the Little Apple, the coaching matchup will not be an unfamiliar one. The Wildcats’ Bill Snyder and the Bears’ Terry Allen were both assistants in the state of Iowa in the 1980’s, matched up for five years when Allen was at Kansas, and they last met when Allen was with the Bears in 2010. Snyder has won all six meetings, outscoring Allen 292-74. The closest matchup was when K-State beat Missouri State 48-24 in 2010. This game is important for K-State as an experienced roster, along with a group of unproven…
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Bruce Chen allowed four hits over a season-high eight innings, and Eric Hosmer’s infield single in the fourth drove in the only run in the Kansas City Royals’ 1-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night. The last time Chen (10-10) lasted eight innings was last September, in his final two starts of the year. The veteran left-hander hadn’t even gone seven in his past 11 outings. Anibal Sanchez (2-4) matched him pitch for pitch most of the night, finally looking like the guy the Tigers thought they were acquiring in a July trade with…
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) A Kansas company will pay $5,000 in fines for not properly maintaining an apartment swimming pool where a 6-year-old boy drowned. Noah Davis drowned June 29 in a pool at Four Winds apartments in Overland Park. Police say his family could not see him at the bottom of the pool because the water was too murky. On Tuesday, the management company that operates the pool pleaded guilty to 10 violations, including failure to maintain the water clarity. PASSCO Four Winds was fined a total of $5,000. The Kansas City Star reports (http://bit.ly/PQ0oug ) that Noah, who…
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Two candidates in a Republican primary for a Kansas House seat from Topeka say they won’t pursue any court challenges now that an unusual special election has settled the contest. Shawnee County officials on Wednesday certified the results from Tuesday’s special election, which was limited to a single Topeka polling place where some voters got the wrong ballots in the Aug. 7 primary. The only race still in doubt from the mix-up was for the Republican nomination in the 52nd House District. The final results show Topeka physician Shanti Gandhi defeating retired Navy and State Department officer…
