Brittany Chambers scored 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the K-State women’s basketball team beat UC-Santa Barbara 60-45 on Saturday night at the UCSB Thunderdome in Santa Barbara, CA.  Chambers connected on 11 of 19 shots from the field, and made three of her seven attempts from beyond the arc.  Ashia Woods added a career high 11 points for the Cats in their non-conference finale.  K-State (9-3) led the Gauchos 43-35 with 11:34 remaining, but the Cats went on a 12-0 run to put the game away.  UCSB (4-8) is coached by former K-State point guard Carlene Mitchell, and…

DODGE CITY, Kan. (AP) Dodge City authorities have identified a woman and child killed in a house fire earlier this week. Dodge City officials say 51-year-old Luz Maria Conejo and 2-year-old Pablo Antonio Coca-Conejo died of smoke inhalation in the fire Thursday. The Dodge City Globe reports that Fire Chief Kevin Norton says the cause of the blaze is under investigation but authorities have determined the fire likely started in the living room of the single-story residence. The deaths have been ruled as accidental. Norton says the house didn’t have any smoke alarms.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A rare gazelle has died at the Topeka Zoo after a sudden illness. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the zoo euthanized the 3-year-old Addra gazelle this week. The animal became sick Wednesday and was unable to stand. The gazelle’s condition worsened, however, and the staff euthanized it after about five hours. Topeka Zoo director Brendan Wiley said the cause of death hasn’t been determined, but a test showed abnormalities in some of the gazelle’s organs, including its liver. More tests are being conducted. Saturday begins the first of many homecomings as soldiers from the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infrantry Division. Family and friends will be reunited with the returning 150 soldiers during a ceremony beginning at 5:15 pm Saturday at Fort Riley. This brigade was deployed to Afghanistan in April, where their  mission was to enable the country’s government, security forces and economy to operate more independently. The remaining 4th Infantry Brigade soldiers will continue to return to Fort Riley throughout the following weeks.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) A University of Kansas School of Education dean has apologized for a crude joke about a turkey that was abused and killed at a fraternity house party earlier this month. A woman in Indiana emailed three deans at the Lawrence campus after reading about the rented turkey being chased and choked before a student killed the bird to end its suffering. The Kansas City Star reports one of the deans, Jim Lichtenberg, wrote an email making fun of the incident and including a slang term describing masturbation. Sales tax numbers for December were released on Friday, showing a decrease in Manhattan over last year. Manhattan Finance Director Bernie Hayen indicates that the decrease amount could be linked to an early “cut off” on sales tax collections.  Though this won’t be verified until next month’s numbers are released. Even with this, a great achievement has been made. “Nearly every retail sector was down compared to a year ago.  Nonetheless, we easily broke the $10 million mark, which, in itself, is a significant milestone.” December numbers showed $800,762 in sales tax receipts, or an adjusted rate of $737,805.
