KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)   Jeremy Guthrie allowed only three singles in seven innings, and the Kansas City Royals rolled to a 5-0 win over the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night.  Guthrie, who struck out a season-high eight, ran his scoreless streak to 15 innings.  He has yielded eight hits and struck out 14 in his past two starts, victories over the A’s and the Chicago White Sox.  Guthrie (5-12) is 2-3 in five starts with the Royals, who acquired him in a July 20 trade with Colorado for left-hander Jonathan Sanchez.  Tim Collins and Greg Holland completed the shutout…

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP)   Sophomore starting offensive lineman Brian Thomas and sophomore safety Urell Johnson have left the Texas Tech Red Raiders.  The 6-3, 319-pound Thomas was a two-year starter at guard, but coach Tommy Tuberville says he was sliding down the depth chart because of conditioning and medical issues.  Tuberville says Johnson was leaving to transfer to Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Miss., to be closer to his hometown of New Orleans.

Tuesday night’s Manhattan City Commission meeting brought forward two important items with the 2013 City Budget and the consideration of a sales tax renewal. After giving a presentation of the proposed action posed by some of the commissioners to approve the 2013 Budget, City Finance Director Bernie Hayen says he does not agree with moving forward with it. Geri Simon, Co-chair of the Save Our Social Services group, attended the meeting and agrees with Hayen. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Education officials say Kansas has until next spring to revise the way it evaluates teachers to factor in students’ performance on standardized tests. The officials told State Board of Education members Tuesday that a commission of teachers and administrators will begin working on proposals next month. The commission’s first report is expected in December. Kansas was granted a waiver in June from key provisions of the No Child Left Behind law, which requires all students to be proficient in reading and math by 2014.
