The Riley County Falcons and Wamego girl’s basketball teams have both made it through tough sub state brackets to reach their respective state tournaments beginning later this week. Riley County beat Osage City, Council Grove and Silver Lake to win a 3A sub state championship. The Lady Falcons (17-5) are the seven seed in the 3A state tournament and they will play the number two seed Garden Plain (22-1) on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in Hutchinson at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. Nate Williams threw 7 2/3 innings of two-hit ball and the K-State baseball team claimed their home opener from Oakland 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium. Williams (2-1) did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the top of the sixth inning, when third baseman Mike Carson knocked in the Golden Grizzlies’ first run. The Manhattan Library Association held its annual book sale this past weekend and people from all over Manhattan and the surrounding areas flocked to the Manhattan public library in search of a good book. Over 100,000 books, DVDs, and even magazines were available for a very reasonable price. It was not uncommon for people to be carrying large boxes of books they had purchased out of the library. Taxes, budget cuts and sequestration seemed to be the main topics discussed during Saturday morning’s Legislative Coffee. Representative of the 66th District, Sydney Carlin was the first to share her concerns and thoughts on some of the current issues. Carlin mentioned, tax revenues are down from where they should have been at the end of February. Taxes are down $33 million, and the sales tax is down $800,000 in particular. A large gathering of area business leaders converged on the Manhattan Conference Center Friday night. It was the 88th annual Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce meeting and Banquet. The banquet marked a time of change, and recognition of outstanding members and volunteers from the past year. Outgoing Chair of the Chamber Dan Yunk passed the gavel to the new Chair Frank Beer.
