LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) A University of Kansas student has begun a push to ban smoking throughout the Lawrence campus. The Lawrence Journal-World reports (http://bit.ly/156OsdZ ) that sophomore Ashley Hrabe (RAH’-bee), of Salina, has been involved with the Tobacco Free Kansas Coalition since she was in high school. The university already bans smoking inside or within 20 feet of any campus building. Hrabe wants to prohibit smoking anywhere on campus. Hrabe met this week with faculty, student and staff leaders at a University Senate committee meeting. The Journal-World reports she already has the support of some leaders of the Student Senate.…

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A 26-year-old woman has been ordered held on $1 million bond on charges of attempted murder in the shooting of a Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputy. KFDI-FM reports (http://bit.ly/13Y0ABU ) Clara Crosser, of Gardner, was charged Friday and ordered to return to court for a preliminary hearing March 28. Crosser is one of two suspects in the shooting of a 33-year-old deputy who chased their vehicle Monday into Butler County. The deputy was struck by shotgun pellets in one eye and the upper body. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) An Overland Park man has been sentenced to five years in prison for killing a Lawrence woman in a drunken-driving crash in Lawrence. The Lawrence Journal-World (http://bit.ly/15aUPNl ) reports that 24-year-old Sean Barrett Walker acknowledged he was at fault during a sentencing hearing Friday in Douglas County Court. He said he would take back his actions back if he could. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A member of a group that advocates for Kansas schools is walking 60 miles to Topeka to talk to lawmakers about improved funding. Thirty-five-year-old Heather Ousley of Merriam began walking Saturday morning and plans to arrive in Topeka on Monday night. Teacher’s union members have invited her to attend several legislative sessions Tuesday. The mother of three is a member of Game on For Kansas Schools. An Ogden man is being held on a major bond after being charged with aggravated battery. Michael Dechant (19) was arrested at 10 a.m. Saturday morning by Riley County police. Dechant was charged with a felony level aggravated battery charge. His bond was set at $250,000 and a press release has not yet been issued.

After a rough start to conference play for the Kansas State Wildcats Baseball team, the Bat Cats righted the ship and managed to scrape out two victories in less than 24 hours against new Big 12 member West Virginia. A crowd dressed in varying shades of green crowded into Aggieville on Saturday to celebrate the Saint Patrick’s day holiday with the 35th annual parade presented by the Aggieville business association. Evan Tuttle, the Executive Director for the association says that there were over sixty participants in this year’s parade, with organizations such as the Manhattan Shriners taking part, as well as various children waving ribbons and riding scooters.
