TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Nearly half of all Kansas counties have declared burn bans until further notice because of hot and dry conditions. The Kansas adjunct general’s office on Monday said 45 of the state’s 105 counties have bans in place, while one other has instituted a “strong restrictions” ban, meaning burning is allowed only if a fire department has deemed the site safe for burning. Counties with burn bans include Anderson, Atchison, Barton, Bourbon, Cherokee, Cheyenne, Clark, Clay, Decatur, Edwards, Ellsworth, Ford, Franklin, Graham, Grant, Greenwood, Gove, Hodgeman, Johnson, Lane, Lincoln and Logan. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) The latest government report is painting a deteriorating portrait of the Kansas corn crop. Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday that 31 percent of the Kansas corn crop was in poor to very poor condition. It rated 43 percent as fair while 24 was considered in good and 2 percent in excellent condition. The agency noted that average weekly temperatures in Kansas were 7 to 15 degrees above normal. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback will lead a delegation of state and local officials heading overseas to promote aircraft built in the state. The Republican governor will be joined by Commerce Secretary Pat George and representatives from the Greater Wichita Economic Development Coalition in attending the Farnborough International Airshow in England from July 9 through July 15. The delegation will be seeking to expand export markets for Kansas aircraft. The state exports more than $2 billion in aircraft, accounting for more than 18 percent of all exports coming from Kansas. Representatives from the Kansas Department of Transportation briefed Pottawatomie County commissioners Monday on the Manhattan Metropolitan Planning Organization. 1. A Manhattan child told police he was threatened by a man with a knife on Monday morning. A 6 year old boy told riley county police sometime between 745 and 8 monday morning a male suspect brandished a knife and threatened him.  Police say the incident allegedly occurred somewhere around the 4-thousand block of tuttle creek boulevard, and there is a possibility of 3 other children being victims as well.   The incident has not been verfied by an adult witness. Friday’s crash of the state’s new motor vehicle system is making it hard for employees in the Riley County Treasurer’s office and those in other motor vehicle offices across the state. The system installed by 3M Motor Vehicle Systems is used in other states including Iowa, Montana, and soon in Connecticut, but Kansas is the first state to report major issues. “Our system made us unable to print (on Friday),” Riley County Treasurer Eileen King says. “Well if we can’t print a decal to put on someone’s tag then we can’t do business.” The malfunctioning of the system has caused the state to…

A fire in Louisville Saturday night caused a significant amount of damage to Mayor Bobby Benton’s home.  The high winds caused an electrical short, which then in turn started the fire.  The entire family was home at the time of the fire, but everyone made it out safely. Pottawatomie County Fire Supervisor, Bruce Brazzle, says “The walls are still standing, but the roof is gone”.  Brazzle adds, the National Weather Service called in ten minutes prior to inform them of the high winds. NEW YORK (AP)   Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano has asked Jose Bautista, Prince Fielder and Mark Trumbo to join him on the AL side for the All-Star home run derby.   Cano announced the invitations Monday, a day after rosters were announced for the All-Star game July 10 in Kansas City.  Rumors swirled on Monday that Cano would select the Royals’ Billy Butler, but the hometown faithful will have to find another favorite.
