The Manhattan Mercury is reporting that K-State associate athletic director for compliance Jamie Vaughn is leaving the school after three years.  Vaughn is taking a similar postion at the University of Nebraska, the state in which he attended Wayne State Colllege and began his career in athletics.  He also worked in compliance at Ohio State, New Mexico State, and Texas Tech before coming to K-State. Vaughn caught the ire of Wildcat fans when the NCAA suspended men’s basketball player Jamar Samuels from the 2nd round NCAA tournament game against Syracuse.  Samuels was found to have accepted inpermissible benefits. HOUSTON (AP)   Luke Hochevar pitched into the eighth inning, two relievers completed the shutout, and Billy Butler hit a solo home run to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 2-0 win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night.  Hochevar earned his first victory since May 12. Wamego officials find some solutions easier than others. At Tuesday’s City Commission meeting, Mayor Bill Ditto brought up the Columbarium  issue again. He said the Commission has studied the issue, but more work is needed. City Manager Merl Page said it’s difficult to come up with a pricing structure that’s consistent and self-sufficient and takes inflation into account. A Columbarium  is a structure that houses burial urns. A Columbarium was built and donated by the Vanderbilt family and placed in the Wamego City Cemetery. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) A preliminary report on a Florida plane crash that killed the Bramlage family of Junction City says the plane quickly began losing altitude after changing its flight path to avoid bad weather. The National Transportation Safety Board issued its preliminary report Tuesday on the June 7 crash that killed Junction City businessman Ronald Bramlage, his wife, Becky, and their four children. The report does not discuss a cause of the accident. Instead, it details what three witnesses saw or heard shortly before the crash. Manhattan’s Regional Airport has been working on expansion plans for quite some time, and Tuesday night’s Manhattan City Commission moved plans forward a bit. Airport Director Peter Van Kuren brought the next phase of improvement to the Commission, the design development and bid services stage. Also included in the proposal was the acceptance of a 90-10% funding grant from the Federal Aviation Administration. The commission approved the package by a unanimous vote.  The item that garnered the most discussion, however, came from the consent agenda. After 32 years of service, Battalion Chief Craig Paxton will be retiring from the Junction City Fire Department. Paxton began his career June 23, 1981 and has advanced from a firefighter position through every officer position within the department during his career. Paxton didn’t expect this to be his career. “A buddy and I were sitting around talking about it one day,” Paxton said.  “We saw an ad in the paper.  We were both working construction at the time way back.  I talked him into applying with me and almost 32 years later, we’re both still firefighters.” Paxton’s last day will be June…

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The Kansas House majority leader has been spared a primary election showdown with a fellow Republican lawmaker who’s also a political ally. This year’s political redistricting put Majority Leader Arlen Siegfreid and Rep. Mike Kiegerl in the same House district. Both are from the Johnson County city of Olathe. Kiegerl had made clear he didn’t want to run against his friend, but he filed before the redistricting was complete and was unable to meet a deadline for quitting the race.
