WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Supporters of anti-abortion activist Randall Terry are opening a presidential campaign office in Kansas ahead of the state’s April 14 Democratic caucus. Terry, the founder of Operation Rescue, is best known in Kansas for organizing the massive 1991 Summer of Mercy abortion protests in Wichita. He is now running as a Democratic candidate against President Barack Obama. Terry’s campaign scheduled news conferences Wednesday in Wichita, Topeka and Kansas City, Kan., to coincide with the opening of his campaign headquarters in Wichita. OTTAWA, Kan. (AP) An eastern Kansas man who pleaded no contest to sexually abusing a child will serve at least 25 years of a life sentence before he qualifies for parole. The Ottawa Herald reports that 33-year-old Duane Francis Brannan received the maximum term allowed by state law at his sentencing Monday in Franklin County District Court. Four other counts were dropped in exchange for the Ottawa man’s plea last month to a single count. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The Kansas Senate has endorsed a cut in the state sales tax as members debate proposals from Gov. Sam Brownback to reduce income taxes. The Senate voted 29-11 on Tuesday to reduce the sales tax to 5.7 percent from the current 6.3 percent in July 2013, adding the proposal as an amendment to a broader tax bill. Debate on the bill continued, and senators expected to decide Tuesday evening whether to give the entire measure first-round approval. The sales tax was raised in 2010 to help balance the budget, and is already scheduled to drop in 2013.…

A series of car break-ins has Riley County police keeping a close watch on one particular area in Manhattan RCPD received three calls early Wednesday morning, regarding vehicles that had been broken into. The incidents occurred on Lawrence Rd., James Ave., and Gary Ave.,  all located just south of Susan B. Anthony Middle School. Riley County police are looking into a report of aggravated battery, which came in Tuesday. According to the report, a female was struck by a vehicle that was driven by someone with whom she had a domestic relationship. The incident in question occurred at the intersection of Pierre and S. 10th street back on March 15th. The victim suffered only minor injuries that did not require treatment. At this point no arrests have been made as police continue to investigate the matter.

A group from Manhattan will be part of an open house being offered by Crisis City, a multidiscipline training facility operated by the Kansas Division of Emergency Management. The public is invited to its second annual Disaster Preparedness Day and Open House Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no cost to attend and parking is free. Due to the continued wet weather this week, Kansas Department of transportation crews have not been able to apply pavement markings on K-18 in Manhattan, which are needed to help direct drivers for the traffic changes previously announced for later in the week. Two of the closures that were originally scheduled were completed  Tuesday, with the remaining closures to now take place on Friday  or Saturday, again dependent on the weather. Wamego is going after additional grant funds. At Tuesday’s City Commission meeting, City Manager Merl Page asked for approval to go after $190,000 in additional Kansas Department of Transportation funding available for the U.S. Hwy 24 Corridor improvements. Page said this request came about after a recent conversation with KDOT asking if the City wanted to move forward on the Hwy. 24/Kaw Valley Road improvements, saying they needed positive action so the paperwork could be sent out. HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP)   Five members of the University of Southern Mississippi pep band no longer have scholarships after taking part in the heckling of a K-State basketball player at last Thursday’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament game.  The school announced Tuesday that the five students also were removed from the band and will take sensitivity training.  The students have not been identified.  USM issued an apology last week to K-State point guard Angel Rodriguez.  Rodriguez was the target of chants of “Where’s your green card?” during the Wildcats’ 70-64 second-round victory in the NCAA tournament.  He said he heard the…
