TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul says he has no numeric goal in mind as he chases delegates in Saturday’s Kansas caucuses. The 12-term Texas congressman said after a Topeka rally with about 500 supporters Friday that he just needs delegates in his bid for the GOP nomination. Kansas has 40 delegates up for grabs in Saturday’s caucuses, which will be held at 96 locations around the state. Paul scheduled stops later Friday in Wichita and Lawrence. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A former Wichita police officer who admitting committing sex crimes against two citizens while he was on duty will not be sent to jail. Joseph Taylor McGill was sentenced Friday to three years of probation for aggravated sexual battery and sexual battery. Prosecutors say he inappropriately touched two residents while he was on duty and in uniform. He pleaded guilty earlier this year. McGill also must register as a sex offender and will be jailed if he violates his probation. McGill was a police officer for three years but resigned shortly after the charges were filed.
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Wichita police say a woman was killed and her boyfriend was injured in a stabbing in a K-Mart parking lot in south Wichita. Lt. Todd Ojile says the 35-year-old woman and her 39-year-old boyfriend both were stabbed Thursday night. The Wichita Eagle reports that witnesses told police the two appeared to be arguing before the stabbing. Ojile says police are not looking for any other suspects. The couple was evicted from a hotel next to the K-Mart before the stabbing. The man was from Wichita and the woman had moved to the city last summer.
The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office is asking for assistance in locating a runaway juvenile from rural Onaga. According to Sheriff Greg Riat, Corey Troxel, 14, left the foster home he was staying at by exiting a bedroom window Wednesday evening. He is believed to have left on foot. Troxel is a white male, about 5-foot-10, weighing 140 lbs. with brown hair and brown eyes. It is unknown if Troxel left the Onaga area or if he may be going to the Oskaloosa or Topeka areas, where family is located. He was last known to be wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt…
On Thursday Riley County Police detained an Eisenhower Middle School student for alleged aggravated child endangerment. On Wednesday, Riley County EMS responded to the Eisenhower Middle School on a report of a student suffering from medical problems. The student was transported to Mercy Regional Health Center. School officials say they discovered the ill student may have been given perscription medication by another. On Thursday they contacted the RCPD with the information, and after investigation, Toby Ritchie Jr. was detained for aggravated endangerment of a child. Ritchie was released to his parents.
The Riley County Police Department foiled an escape plot from Riley County Jail. Police say a confidential informant notified the department of a plot on Thursday. The call prompted security checks that allegedly uncovered more evidence of the plan, which reportedly included a concealed weapon and multiple people. No arrests have been made at this time, and the case has been forwarded to the Riley County District Attorney’s office to ascertain what charges if any are brought forward from the incident.
The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office continues the investigation of a structure fire at 520 Jefferson street in St. George a couple of months ago. The fire was reported to the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office just after midnight on Jan. 14. The home was occupied at the time by the residents, though no injuries from the fire were reported and all occupants were able to escape the residence . The home and its contents were a total loss. K-18 has been seeing some lane closures and redirecting recently as the project continues to progress towards completion. Starting Monday and going until Friday, there will be lane closures at the crossover west of the airport. Starting Monday, March 19, eastbound and westbound K-18 traffic will be head to head in the existing eastbound K-18 lanes from Ogden east to Seth Child Road in Manhattan. K-18 traffic will remain like this until mid November. Drivers should expect delays.
It’s a complicated forumula, but property valuation notices are on the way or may have already arrived for Pottawatomie county property owners. County Appraiser Lois Schlegel says the 2012 notices went out Wednesday. “Things are pretty stable within our county,” Schlegel tells KMAN News. “Our valuation shows no indication of an upward or downward trend in the market.” Of all valid residential sales in the county, 86 percent were along U.S. Hwy 24 from St. Mary’s to Manhattan, with 78 percent of those sales from Wamego to Manhattan. Daylights savings time is this weekend and it’s time to think about springing forward. Blue Township Fire Chief, Eric Ward, says residents should take this time to not only change clocks, but also change smoke detector batteries. “Smoke detector batteries should be replaced every six months,” Ward says. “(Daylight Savings) makes a logical time to remember to do them.” Even if you have a hardwired smoke detector, there is a battery back up in the event of a power loss, Ward adds. Daylight Savings begins at 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning, causing us to lose an hour.
