KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) Justin Smoak and Michael Saunders each hit two-run homers and the Seattle Mariners beat the Kansas City Royals 9-6 Tuesday night.  Every Mariners starter had at least one hit. Jesus Montero went 3 for 4 and drove in two runs.  Smoak homered with Montero aboard in the three-run first inning.  It was the second straight game Smoak homered in the first.  Montero’s double scored Casper Wells with the first run.  Saunders homered in the fifth inning off Vin Mazzaro after Miguel Olivo singled.  The Mariners scored three more runs in the second inning to chase left-hander…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) The Kansas City Royals have designated struggling starter Jonathan Sanchez for assignment.  The Royals announced the move before Tuesday night’s game against the Seattle Mariners.  Sanchez was 1-6 with a 7.76 ERA in 12 starts.  The left-hander, who threw a no-hitter for San Francisco in July 2009, gave up seven runs in 1 1-3 innings in Monday night’s loss to the Mariners.  The Royals acquired Sanchez and minor-leaguer Ryan Verdugo last November from the Giants for outfielder Melky Cabrera, who is hitting .353 and was named MVP of last week’s All-Star Game in Kansas City.  The…

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) Missouri coach Gary Pinkel says his team won’t be intimidated playing in the Southeastern Conference.  Pinkel says there’s a perception that “we play a bunch of high school teams.”  He says the Tigers know they have to earn respect in the SEC, but they have already played in a tough Big 12 Conference.  Pinkel says Missouri fans have gone beyond excitement over playing in the SEC and “have become fanatical about it.”  Missouri will open the season with standout quarterback James Franklin and the nation’s top prospect in wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham.  Franklin had shoulder surgery in…

The budget discussion took up a lot of time at the Manhattan Ogden school board meeting.  The board was presented with two different options to think about before they actually make a decision on where to go with the budget. Lew Faust, director of business services, presented the first option with the LOB at 25% and the capital outlay at 6 and the second option with the LOB at 26% and the capital outlay at 6. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A veterinarian says when she was fired by the Topeka Zoo her world was “turned upside down.” Shirley Yeo Llizo has filed a federal discrimination lawsuit against the city of Topeka, alleging she was fired from the Topeka Zoo in 2009 because she is a female of Chinese ancestry and a naturalized U.S. citizen. The city has denied the allegations. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that Llizo got her job back in 2010 after an arbitrator ruled the city shouldn’t have dismissed her. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) After three weeks of testimony, a Shawnee County jury is expected to begin deliberating the fate of one of nine people charged with fatally shooting a Topeka woman. Testimony ended Tuesday in the trial of 27-year-old Anceo Stovall, who is charged with premeditated first-degree murder in the shooting death of 40-year-old Natalie Gibson. He also is charged in the wounding of Gibson’s partner, 42-year-old Lori Allison, and several other charges from other alleged crimes. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A Topeka man pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter in a 2007 death in Shawnee County. Twenty-seven-year-old Ryan Michael Thompson entered the plea in the death of 18-year-old Zachary Scholl Armold of Topeka. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports Thompson was arrested May 3 for allegedly providing illegal substances that later caused a person’s death. The newspaper says Armold died May 11, 2007. As part of the plea bargain, prosecutors dropped charges of possession of narcotics with intent to sell, aggravated endangering of a child and furnishing alcohol to a minor. Thompson will be sentenced Sept. 6.
