The Kansas Highway Patrol continues it’s investigation into an early Sunday morning accident in Nemaha county that took the life of a Manhattan man. Daniel Schwarz, 23, died in the accident on K-63. Also injured were occupants of the 2008 Chevy Silverado Schwarz was driving, including Michael Chase,22, of Beattie, Loralet Prell, 22, of Home and Joshua Roady, 22, of Marysville. Roady and Prell were both transported by Lifestar, Roady to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas city and Prell to Stormont Vail in Topeka. Prell was discharged from Stormont Vail. Chase went to the Onaga hospital.
A Manhattan teenager accused of killing another has pleaded not guilty and will go to trial in September. Cole Drake, 15, entered his plea late Monday afternoon in the Riley County courtroom of Judge David Stutzman to the charges of 1st degree murder. Additionally, Drake waived his right to a trial within 90 days. Drake is charged with the killing of 14 year old Tyler Dowling, and is being held with a $500,000 bond by the Riley County Police Department. A motions hearing is set for the Aug.8 at 9:00 am, and trial is set for Sept. 24-29.
A Manhattan woman accidentally ran her vehicle into the Westloop McDonald’s Sunday afternoon, injuring one. Riley County Police say 35-year-old Nancy Ott was adjusting her 1999 Lexus RX300 SUV as she was parking it when the vehicle accelerated through the wall on the eastside of the building, damaging some of the brick and a plate glass window. Ott and her two children, passengers in the vehicle, were unharmed. Injured was Cole Classen, 17, of Whitewater, Kansas, though no information as to the extent of his injuries was available, nor was a damage estimate to the McDonald’s building, itself. Ott has…
Two 11-year-olds were the victims of a criminal threat involving older children at Bergman Elementary School Friday afternoon. The Riley County Police Department says three older kids were shooting what was initially reported to school officials as a rifle at a tree on the school property around 4:30 p.m. The two 11-year-olds, who were at the school for an after-school program, approached the older kids, who threatened to shoot the pair if they told anyone. The three boys were reported, however, and the school was temporarily put into lockdown as the RCPD responded. An investigation revealed the rifle to be…
Another incident of Manhattan High Students trying to get drunk on cold medicine sent one student to the hospital. According to Riley County Police Lieutenant Steve Boyda, three students at Manhattan High’s West campus had taken cold and cough pills in an attempt to become intoxicated before school on Friday morning. School officials were notified of the incident when one of the students, a 16-year-old, became ill and had to be taken to Mercy Regional Health Center. Hospital policy prevents them from releasing patient information. The supplier of the medicine, a 15-year-old student, has been charged with aggravated child endangerment.…
FORT RILEY, Kan. (AP) Fire officials say a grass fire burned more than 2,000 acres near Fort Riley but did no damage to the fort or any of the fort’s assets. More than 40 firefighters from Fort Riley and the Geary County Rural Fire Department fought the blaze Sunday afternoon. Fort Riley Fire officials say the blaze was a natural vegetation fire but it is unclear how it started. KCLY News reports the fire occurred at US Hwy 77 and Kansas Hwy 82 along the northwest perimeter of the Fort Riley military training area. About 2,036 acres burned and fire…
