As we all were reminded on February 29, severe weather can happen at any time in Kansas, and now is the time to start putting yourself back in that mindset. A statewide Severe Weather Awareness Week is planned starting Tuesday, with a tornado drill planned for the entire state that afternoon around 1:30 p.m. Laurie Harrison, Riley County Emergency Management Coordinator, also advises citizens to review severe weather plans at school, work and at home as well as update their supplies kit by replacing canned goods and look at their expiration dates. A prominent civil rights activist recently spoke at Kansas State this week. Dr. Bob Zellner spoke with students about his past experiences growing up in poor Alabama, his family being former members of the Ku Klux Klan and his work in the civil rights movement. He says that his goal is to inspire young people of today with his stories of working with Dr. King and the movement. In a Big 12/Big 10 matchup, Nebraska takes the first ever non-conference meeting from K-State, 9-6 on Tuesday afternoon at Hawks Field in Lincoln.  The Cats grabbed an early 2-0 lead, but the Huskers would score 9 of the next 10 runs.  K-State scored three runs in the bottom of the 8th, and had the bases loaded with two outs.  Mike Kindel hit a hard line drive, but it was snared by Nebraska shortstop Chad Christensen to end the threat. It’s been a season to remember for the Manhattan High girls basketball team.  The Indians won their second Centennial League championships in three years, this time with a undefeated record of 13-0.  MHS broke through their biggest barrier with a 43-39 victory last Friday over Washburn Rural in the substate finals to reach the state tournament for the first time since 1991.  The fourth seeded Tribe will face #5 seed Olathe South in the 6A state tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday night.  The Falcons will be making their eighth straight appearance at state. Most of the Rock Creek boys weren’t even born the last time the Mustangs played in the state tournament in 1994.  Rock Creek will take the floor on Wednesday night in the 3A state quarterfinals in Hutchinson against Moundridge.  The Mustangs are 19-4 with nobody averaging 10 points per game, while the 20-3 Wildcats feature Trey Unrau puts up 26.7 points a night. #5 seed Rock Creek faces off with fourth seeded Mounridge on Wednesday night at 8:15pm in the 3A state tournament quarterfinals in Hutchinson.  Coverage on our sister station, Hot Country B104.7 begins at 8:00.

The Big 12 conference men’s basketball coaches created controversy on Sunday when they honored one of their peers.  There was no argument when Kansas’ Bill Self was named Big 12 coach of the year after leading the Jayhawks to their eighth straight league title.  But, Self shared the honor with Iowa State’s Fred Hoiberg, who revamped the Cyclones into a third place team.   The pick of Hoiberg over Missouri’s Frank Haith for co-Big 12 coach of the year led some to question whether the Big 12’s coaches had a vendetta against departing Missouri. K-State is one of only three teams to put a pair of players on the 10-member women’s all-Big 12 first team with Brittany Chambers and Jalana Childs.  It’s the second straight year Chambers has been first team all league, while Childs was 2nd team all Big 12 last year.  Chambers led the Cats in both scoring and rebounding as a guard at 14.3 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.  Childs posted averages of 14.1 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.  Baylor placed two players on the all-Big 12 first team, Brittney Griner and Odyssey Sims, plus Oklahoma put Aaryn Ellenberg…

Three plots once associated with the Manhattan Community Gardens now belongs to Howie’s Trash and Recycling Service, thanks to action taken Tuesday night by Manhattan City Commissioners. Up for discussion was the sale of three lots at 9th Street and Fair Lane to Howie’s Trash and Recycling Service, which would allow the company to expand their services. “To me, the expansion makes sense,” Greg Wilson, co-owner of Howie’s, told commissioners. “We bought three lots five years ago for $31,500, and these lots are now appraised for $31,900.
